Part A: Air Date January 3, 2019 to April 11, 2019
*Episode 1: Ultrasounds, Wedding Vows, and a Bride-to-be?
Season 8 opens at Zach & Whitney’s house. Erin, Whitney, Carlin, and Josie are having a get together to catch up. There is a lot of food and plants to put in new pots. With the engagement, one on the way, Everly’s arrival, and the vow renewal, there is a lot to talk about. Erin asks Josie about her engagement, and Josie says it was all so perfect. Erin asks if she was nervous; Josie said she was a little nervous but it just happened so fast. Josie says her wedding will definitely be outdoors, which she’s always wanted. Carlin’s engagement will be next, and she knows it is coming soon. Erin asks if she wants it to be a surprise and Carlin says yes. Whitney also says Everly is the happiest baby and asks about the transition to three. Erin says 80% is amazing, 20% makes you want to tear your hair out, but the good balances out. Erin says right now three is a perfect number but next year four is going to sound better and it will have to be up to Chad to decide because she melts down around babies. Whitney’s vow renewal is coming up and they are excited to get married again and it is going to be fantastic. Next, they arrange succulents into pots and Carlin says they are easy to take care of. Carlin says the family is so small with Josie working, Trace at the Sheriff’s department, Katie at cosmetology school, Nathan and Lawson traveling, and Nathan wanting to go to helicopter school. The middle guys note how empty it is now, and Kelly says there are only 14 kids left at home and since they are older they are often gone. Jud says it is totally peace now. The sister bonding session concludes.
Next, we go to a restaurant with Kelly, Josie, and wedding planner Kim. The first thing they do is make a final decision on the venue for Josie’s wedding, but most outdoor venues are booked on all Saturdays in October already. Kim suggests Cove Lake State Park since they do weddings there. They discuss the number of guests and Josie says the to do list is very big. Josie has found a backdrop that she loves: a circle of flowers. Kim and Kelly are trying to come up with how to make this backdrop—Kim suggests willow branches and says they should do it soon so that they dry by the wedding. Josie says they will be pushing it to get everything done on time.
Carlin and Katie have road tripped to the Stewart family home with balloons and gifts and cupcakes. Carlin says their families have a lot in common. Evan’s sister asks what’s going on with them and Evan jokes that he is waiting for her to ask him to marry her. Carlin laughs. They then discuss their plans for the weekend starting with gifts. Carlin gives him a deck of cards with a list of reasons why she loves him. The glue didn’t dry perfectly and they are slightly stuck together but Evan likes them.
Next, Carlin and Evan and his family go to play putt putt/miniature golf. Both couples are competitive. The whole family gets really into the game—apparently this is one of the Stewarts favorite activities. Ethan, Evan's brother, asks about engagement and Evan says he has plans but Carlin doesn't know about it yet. He is going to ask Gil and Kelly soon. At the end of the game, Carlin & Evan tie and give each other a big hug. Carlin is disappointed she didn’t beat him but says they will have to have another date.
Gil & Kelly visit Tori & Bobby for the 4D ultra sound. Tori is 27 weeks and excited for a more sentimental ultrasound and really wants to see if he has hair. Kade is still breech, which is normal at 27 weeks. Babies usually turn by around the 30-week, the ultrasound tech says. They flip to 4D to see his face. Tori is so excited to see him, Kelly and Erin says she will be a great mom. Addee says her baby will be the wildest; Callie says no he won’t, she’ll train him. Tori is disappointed to find out that he does not yet have a lot of hair; this is probably because Bobby was bald as a baby. However, there is a little bit of hair and still time to grow more, so Tori is hopeful. Bobby says it is always special to see the baby and soon they will be holding him.
Next, Evan, Gil and Kelly go to a Mexican restaurant (Evan lives in the same area as Bobby & Tori). At the hostess stand, Evan teaches Gil "three" in Spanish and they sit down to eat. Evan says he wanted to take them out to ask them a question. He says that him and Carlin have been together for almost 2 years, and he loves her so much and they both feel it is God’s will for them to get married if it is Gil & Kelly’s will as well, and so he asks for permission. Gil does the typical fundie dad hem-and-haw for a moment. Gil says they already like him, and they like him and Carlin as a couple, and he gives Evan permission to propose. “We think you’re the guy” Gil says. Gil has a hard time even though he knows they are right for each other. Evan asks if it is okay to propose in September because it is beautiful weather and before Josie’s wedding.
At Zach & Whitney’s, the happy couple is preparing for their vow renewal. “We’re good at this—we’re gonna be pros!” Zach jokes. They load up the car and head to the venue. The vow renewal is at Hunter Valley Farms, an outdoor venue, with a pond in the background. Riley, the coordinator, introduces herself and she walks them through the ceremony at the venue and shows them all that will happen. Zach’s groomsmen are Trace, Jackson, Warden, and Isaiah, with Lawson singing and Nathan seating the family. Kelly is excited for Whitney’s parents, who were not at the first wedding, to be there this time. Whitney’s dad tears up giving her away at the rehearsal. Whitney talks about how her biggest regret is hurting her parents and the choices she made but she is glad that this vow renewal is a chance to show that while she’s made mistakes, God and her parents were there with open arms. This vow renewal is the start of a new life. There will be a sand ceremony with the Bates and Perkins parents there to show their unity. Zach says it was such a great rehearsal and everyone is confident.
It is the day of the vow renewal and Josie arrives to do Whitney’s hair. Josie and Whitney have always had a bond and she was honored to be a bridesmaid. Renee arrives with Whitney’s dress and Whitney says she wanted something more mature and classy this time around. Carlin arrives, slightly late like a Bates, and also mentions she was honored to be asked to be a bridesmaid. They finish getting ready, and it is time for Whitney to see her dad. He is very emotional getting to see her in her dress for the vow renewal. At the photographer’s suggestion, they do all the pictures before the ceremony and there is a lot of stuff they cannot find, like sand, a tie, and the little books with the vows—but Brandon goes out and buys sand, and the tie and vows are located. It is time for the ceremony.
The parents sit, and the bridal party comes in. Lawson walks Kaci and Bradley down the aisle. Then, Whitney and her dad make their way down the aisle to Come Thou Fount. Whitney says her heart is so full that all she can do is cry. Zach says it means more to him than anybody to have her walking down the aisle to him again. Whitney is formally given away by her father and then they read their vows to each other. Zach renews his vows, saying he loves her and how blessed he is. Whitney cries through her vows, and many of the Bates and Perkins family members cry, too. The parents all come up to pour the stand together. Nathan says this vow renewal is about healing, forgiveness, and letting go and how important and special it was to see that. Lawson sings during the sand pouring. Zach and Whitney kiss, and embrace. Whitney's dad comes up to pray at the end of the ceremony. Zach thanks him as he comes up. Whitney thanks everyone for their prayers and for the chance to do this with her parents. Then her dad prays and hugs both of them. Gil presents them for the second time and they make their way out of the ceremony holding their kids. Whitney says it was the perfect day and they were glad it happened.
After the vow renewal, there is food and cake at the reception. Whitney says that when they bought their house, they promised Jackson, Warden, and Isaiah that they would tell them first if they ever had any announcement, so they tell them ~something~ and then the boys take a lap. They go into the reception and Bradley announces that mommy has a baby in her belly. The family rejoices and the episode concludes here.
*Episode 2: Big Apple Bride
At the Bates house, Josie is looking at wedding dresses online. Josie says she wants something simple and flowy with lace long sleeves. Josie found one she loves online. In a talking head, Gil says he wishes they would all share one wedding dress to save money. Kelly asks Josie where they can go to see the dress and it is in New York City (NYC). Kelly says they should have a fun trip; they include Whitney, who has never been to the city. Kelly is worried they will go to NYC and try on the dress and it might not be the one.
Carlin and Evan go ring shopping to give him ideas of what she likes. They arrive at the store with Ethan, Katie, and Callie. Evan is worried she won’t like a ring he picks out, so he wants her opinion. Carlin tries on a few rings and really likes the halo style. Carlin keeps asking Evan for his opinion and he keeps just asking what she likes. Callie wants Carlin to try on the biggest one, which is over the top and costs $29k. They finish shopping, and Carlin says she likes a round diamond, with a halo and a skinny band with diamonds.
In NYC, Whitney loves seeing the sights—they take a bus tour to see more of the city. Kelly, Josie, Carlin, and Whitney make up the party and they are all having fun on the tour. Josie is not as enthusiastic and Kelly knows it is because her mind is on the dress. The bus goes through Time Square and Whitney is so happy to see the New Year’s Ball and everything in NYC. They get off the bus at Central Park and go for a little walk before heading to the appointment.
Back in Tennessee, it is Jud’s birthday and the boys are having a golf outing. The boys have trouble being quiet, and the producers ask the middle boys what “etiquette” means. Isaiah says, “Matt, you know we don’t like these kinds of words” and Jackson says, “it’s golf manners” and Warden exclaims, “did he get that right?” Gil helps the little guys practice their swings, and as they go further into the course, Jeb gets distracted. It was a fun outing with the middle and little boys, and Gil says he is looking forward to more.
Back in NYC, Josie and her crew arrive at Leanne Marshall’s showroom. Josie is nervous and anxious about this. They begin pulling dresses and Josie puts on Dress #1. It isn’t the one she saw online. Kelly is concerned about how much the top looks like skin color and that her dad would be nervous. Carlin says she loved it but the placement of the lace was weird. They decide to move on to the next one. Josie comes out in Dress #2, which the Bates all love. Josie and Carlin agree that they want longer sleeves, but the color of this dress is better. Then, Josie tries on Dress #3—the one she wanted to come in and see. They all love it and Josie asks if they could line it with ivory instead of the nude color and all the Bates agree that this is the one. Josie loves it and says she knows it is the right one. Josie is so glad that they had a great girls trip and she found a dress–she knows Carlin is ready to be next.
*Episode 3: A Proposal to Plan & Wedding To-Do’s!
tw: This episode contains discussion of a miscarriage in the final paragraph.
Evan meets with Kelly and Erin at Erin’s house to make a plan for the proposal. Evan says he is lucky to have a lot of women in his life, between Carlin’s family and his own family, so he is getting a lot of good ideas. Zach says that he doesn’t like these guys getting help from his sister because the poor guy who marries Callie is going to have to propose in space. Whitney makes a face at him. Erin says that Carlin wants to go somewhere new, for the element of surprise and wow factor, and that Carlin wants a formal proposal. Kelly suggests a lighthouse. Gil says when Erin and Kelly make a plan, they go all out. Erin finds a lighthouse online in Portland, ME and Evan can see it. Erin says that Carlin has always talked about dancing—and Kelly says both families generally avoid dancing so it will really be a first dance. Everyone is excited for the next step.
At the main house, the family is gathering for Zach’s idea: a cooking competition. Everyone is making a chicken dish and a vegetable side. The younger kids and those who are not cooking will judge. Those competing—the couples and Lawson—have two hours to make dinner. Zach is doing jalapeƱo popper chicken and stuffed mushrooms, which is his mom’s favorite, since she can sway a lot of votes. Erin is making chicken stuffed with different vegetables. Lawson does fried chicken and thinks it will be a crowd pleaser. Everyone is not quite ready at the end of two hours, but they manage to finish off the competition. The little kids judge the presentation first and then taste it. Jeb refuses to taste anything but still gives each dish a 10. Zach’s goes well, and so does Erin’s. Callie is a big fan of Erin’s. Lawson’s fried chicken and mac’n’cheese gets a 0 from Jeb. Judson says the cooks should have bacon and eggs. Zach ends up in 3rd, Lawson is in 2nd, and Erin wins with 69 points. Kelly says marriage has helped Zach and Erin become really good cooks, and if Lawson got married he might win next time. Gil says, “If Lawson gets married, we’d all be winners.” Overall, the cooking competition was a hit and Zach wants to have another.
Kelly is excited for Josie’s outdoor wedding and the beautiful pictures it will produce. Josie and Kelly go meet the wedding planner. Josie is worried about the rain, most of all. They look at the reception building. They go look at the field and they pick the location and Kelly is excited about how beautiful it is. The wedding planner agrees with Kelly that they are in a better position than they usually are for a wedding.
tw: miscarriage
At Zach & Whitney’s house, the family is on the porch waiting for Erin & Chad. Whitney has just had a miscarriage, and wants to be around her family, especially because Erin & Chad have also experienced miscarriages. They are planting a blooming tree in honor of their losses. Erin says it is something you don’t forget and being able to remember helps. Whitney says it was hard on Bradley but he hopes Jesus will give them another baby. Erin and Whitney exchange a big hug and Whitney is grateful for Erin’s support. Zach says it is beyond words. The kids help their parents plant the tree; everyone except for Everly (and Chad, who is holding her) help put the tree in the ground. The tree is a reminder of the loss as well as all the good things God has done for them.
end tw: miscarriage
*Episode 4: A Sweet Shower & a Surprise Switch!
Kelly and Josie are in NYC to see her dress. They are excited to see it and hope it does not need a lot of altering. Kelly says the dress is the #1 priority. They arrive and Josie is so excited to see the dress. Josie gets in the dress and they are both so excited to see it lined. Josie and Kelly love the dress, and notice the buttons added to the sleeves. Kelly also notices the sleeves are tight and suggests an alteration there. “Well, you want to be able to dance,” the Leanne Marshall associate says. Actually, she just wants to be able to hug people at the reception. They are going to have Renee alter it, and Josie and Kelly are so excited about the dress and everything coming together.
In Nashville at the Stewarts, Evan asks his mom to help him practice dancing. Evan wants to include it in the proposal, but he doesn’t know how to dance. They start practicing in the living room. Erin thinks it would be adorable if they mess up; it’s not about being perfect, its about making her dreams come true. His mom asks how he is doing and he says he is nervous and excited to as her.
It is time for Josie’s bridal shower, and it is tea party themed. The sisters are all setting up for the big event. The Bates are still decorating as the guests arrive. Kelly welcomes everyone and offers them to get food. Once everyone arrives, the games begin. First, they play a game where they have to smell and guess the tea bags at their table. The Bates sisters begin to work by process of elimination rather than smelling the tea. The Bates sisters joke about winning and they get candy bars. Gil says he should have been there because he loves tea. Next, Josie opens gifts. She is excited to get new stuff for her new home. Josie says it is 20 days away and it really feels real now.
In Nashville, Carlin, Tori, and Kelly are in the studio with Lawson. Evan is planning on surprising Carlin during the studio session. Carlin and Tori don’t know he is on his way, but everyone else in the studio does. Evan is singing in the car, practicing for his surprise. He is so nervous. Evan arrives and is waiting to sneak in. Lawson gets back in the booth to fix something and Tori and Carlin are confused why. The lights are off and Evan sneaks in the booth, and then a different song plays. Evan starts singing that he has her bags packed and tickets in hand and Carlin realizes what is going on. Carlin goes to find him and gives him a big hug. He asks if she is ready. Carlin gushes about hugging, which makes Lawson uncomfortable. She says she cannot wait to see how Lawson acts when he finds a girl. Tori and Carlin are so excited about the surprise and Evan gives Carlin luggage. Erin was bummed she couldn’t be there. Evan says he is gonna tell her where they are going once they get to the airport. Carlin doesn’t know what is coming next and has taken all her rings off just in case.
*Episode 5: The Maine Event
Evan and Carlin are in Maine, and both are excited for their romantic trip. Both sets of parents are also here. They go to Portland Lobster Co to try lobster. Carlin is really not excited about it. Carlin says Evan balances her and makes her more adventurous with food. Carlin gets a cheeseburger, and Evan gets a lobster roll. Evan holds a live one to spook Carlin and she is pretty freaked out, but he convinces her to touch them. They take their food to go for a picnic and Evan surprises her with rental bikes, another of her favorite activities. The bike rental guy shows them a good picnic spot. Carlin and Evan are biking alone, the parents are driving, and Kelly says all the people around them will be their chaperone. Carlin says God is their chaperone. Carlin and Evan head off, and they are excited to be riding bikes; they briefly hold hands as they go. Carlin says she is anticipating that big moment, but for now she is enjoying the trip. Carlin and Evan, as they bike, get turned around and the parents are calling them worried. They are completely lost and trying to find the picnic spot.
They pull over and Evan is trying to use his phone to find his mom. They connect with Gil on the phone and manage to find their families. They are all ready for lunch, and they stop to eat. They enjoy their food. Carlin is not sure about the lobster, but Evan is determined to make Carlin try it. She tries a piece and is not a fan of it. She says she cannot describe it. At the end of lunch, it is time to go change and get ready for “the Maine event.”
At the house, Evan is talking to his dad and he is so nervous. He is worried he might rip his pants and he wants to make everything perfect. Evan says there are a lot of moving pieces and he is counting on the parents to help him out again. Portland Head Lighthouse is the spot that Evan and Erin picked out together. Erin says it is magical and different from what everyone else has done. The parents arrive at the spot with decorations, and they are decorating as quickly as they can. The parents only have a 30-minute head start on Evan and Carlin. They are lining the path with single white roses in clear vases, but the vases keep falling over. A cellist arrives to play for them.
Back at the rental house, Evan tells Carlin she looks beautiful and she is so excited to say yes to the man of her dreams. They head outside and see a limo waiting for them. It is Carlin’s first time in a limo and she cannot stop smiling and giggling at the surprise. “Pretty legit, huh?” Evan says. They hold hands as they travel, and they talk about their nerves. In a talking head, Whitney says that it must be sweet for Carlin to see all the care it took to pull this off. They get out of the limo and walk towards the lighthouse, Evan looking for the parents and not quite sure where they are going. The parents are scrambling to finish up for them.
Carlin says this is the biggest night of her life; she worked hard to get the perfect dress and hair, and she was thinking about the little girl dreaming of this. And that this is where it all comes together, where someone who cares so much for you to put so much thought into a perfect weekend. They come upon the cellist and see the roses. Carlin says all she could focus on was Evan. Evan reads her a poem titled “My One.” It ends with a special question, “may I have this dance?” and she says she doesn’t know how and he tells her that they’ll figure out and to follow his lead. They dance together, slowly and as romantic as Carlin has always dreamed it would be. They stop dancing, and Evan says he loves her so much, and gets on one knee, and asks her to marry him. Carlin says yes, and they embrace. He put the ring on her finger, and they are both so excited. They call the parents over and they are cheering and excited. Evan thanks the cellist as Carlin hugs her parents. The parents take pictures. The Stewarts are glad to be gaining not only a daughter, but “about 40 people” into their family. Carlin says she wanted to stay in that moment forever, and the episode concludes with a still shot of their engagement.
*Episode 6: Bate & Switch
Katie is turning 18, and her family is planning a surprise party since she hates being the center of attention. Since Katie and Isaiah have close birthdays, the family is acting like it’s Isaiah’s party, but will surprise Katie. Katie is usually the one to figure out family secrets, so the family has been extra careful. Kelly starts off wishing Isaiah a happy birthday and saying they were going to go around and give Isaiah birthday praises. Before they do, Kelly stops them and says wrong birthday and that they are really celebrating Katie. Katie was surprised and the family is delighted they got her. Katie cries a little. The family praises Katie instead and they enjoy teasing Katie and giving her praises. They talk about how she is going to cosmetology school, learning to fly with Nathan, being an adult, and not one of the little girls anymore. Kelly says not to worry, that they are going to celebrate Isaiah next, and Katie is touched that Isaiah did this for her. The family enjoys pizza, one of Katie’s favorites, and then ice cream to finish the celebration off.
Kelton, Josie, and Whitney are going apartment shopping for after the wedding. They are excited. At the first complex, they get to see the pool area of the property, and Kelton says they are looking for a small one bedroom, and they like walking around the kitchen, which has a lot of storage. In general, this first apartment is very spacious and Josie is excited by it. Josie says moving out will be a change but she is looking forward to it being quiet and clean. They decide to look at a few more places.
At the next complex, Kelton is worried this one might be out of their price range. It has granite countertops. Whitney says you can tell that they are in love with it. Josie & Kelton say they want a one bedroom because they don’t want a lot of visitors in the beginning. The apartment is close to Josie’s work and their families. Josie says they will think and pray about it.
Jackson has saved up and made a big purchase: a 1993 Ford truck. Callie says he is in love with his new truck. Jackson is fixing the truck because it is leaking anti-freeze. Nathan and Gil help Jackson work on it. Jackson says he has $840 in it now and thinking it will be $1100 to get it running and $1500 with taxes and insurances. Gil thinks it will be a good lesson for Jackson, to learn about mechanics, responsibility, and managing money. Jackson turns it on and they find the leak has moved from where they fixed it to a hose. Jackson is still excited about getting it working eventually.
The Bates ladies arrive at Ms. Renee’s in Kentucky. Josie needs a lot of alternations to get her dress to fit her. The top is so tight that Josie can’t move her arms, and the sleeves are too long. Renee finds that there is no seam allowance and decides the right move is to get her scissors. Josie and Whitney cringe. She closes her eyes and the Bates ladies hold each other. She opens the seams but there is still not enough room. Renee says she will enlarge the arm holes. Josie and Kelly are a little worried, but Renee is confident she will get it done in time. Josie has given the bridesmaids guidelines but let them pick their own dresses. Katie doesn’t like hers and it doesn’t match, so they decide she will get a new dress. The rest of the bridesmaids dresses are a hit. Carlin jokes that they’ll see how they work on the wedding day, and Josie looks stressed but says, “it’s gonna be a great day.”
*Episode 7: A Bride, A Groom, and a Love That's True!
We are three days out from Josie’s wedding, and Renee comes to the Bates home with the finished wedding dress. Kelly tells Josie this is the #1 detail. Callie is excited to see the dress, but sad Josie is getting married and moving out. Josie comes out in the dress and the little girls love her. Josie is worried it makes her hips look big but is reassured by her mom and Renee. Kelly says guys like hourglass shapes. Gil says it is a girl thing to question anything. Josie finally admits that she just can’t see it; she needs her glasses. When she has her glasses, she really likes the dress. Josie says it is so perfect and thanks Renee.
The little girls are helping with the decorations by painting the gold over the white lanterns from Tori’s wedding. Callie says their mom might pay them for doing this; Ellie says she’ll change her mind when she sees them. Callie says the whole family pitches in for the weddings. Ellie says they should have been taught how to use spray paint before starting this. Addee arrives and Ellie sprays her arm. Carlin says the little ones feel special when they have a little part in it.
Tim, a friend, has made a giant wrought iron circle which they will cover with flowers for the wedding. Lawson and Gil go to pick it up. Erin says the last three weddings have had big items: Michal had logs, and Tori had trees. Erin and Whitney let them off easy, she says. They get the metal circle into the truck, but Gil is worried about securing it. He decides to have Lawson ride in the back of the truck with the hoop. Both Gil and Lawson express that the hoop's safety is the top priority—Josie can get married without Lawson but not without the hoop. Gil is driving Lawson back with the hoop, Lawson standing in the back of the truck holding the hoop. UpTV has included a "Do Not Attempt" sign. But they make it home.
It is the night of the rehearsal dinner, and the Balka family has planned the event, as it is traditional for the groom’s side to plan the rehearsal dinner, even though Mrs. Balka has passed away. Mr. Balka is assisted by his mother-in-law, his sister-in-law, and his children, especially Ariana. The family arrives and Josie is impressed with how gorgeous it is. Like Tori, Josie and Kelton begin with dinner since rehearsals tend to go long in their family. Mr. Balka opens up with a speech, thanking his family for helping. Alyssa goes next and talks about how Josie was her partner growing up and they did everything together. Gil says they were always a little team and it was so sweet and her speech really took him back. Alyssa says she can’t believe Josie is old enough to get married and Gil chimes in with “Me either!” and tells Kelton he is a very lucky guy. Bobby, the best man, is next. Bobby says he was warned against living with one of his best friends in college but Kelton became his brother. Bobby recalls when Josie & Kelton first got close and then decided to call it off since she was so young at the time. Kelton called Bobby distraught but said that “this hurts as bad as anything I’ve ever felt in my life, but if God made me get close to Josie just so you could meet Tori, that’s okay with me.” Bobby says that has always stuck with him, because Kelton was so supportive of him. Bobby is glad it came around and he was able to tell this story and they are so excited to be in the same stage of life again. Kelton said that meant a ton to him.
They move outside for the rehearsal, and Josie is happy to see it coming together. Josie wants to keep her rehearsal short, so Josie and Kim the coordinator move through the ceremony quickly. Kelton says it was smooth. The rehearsal goes off without a hitch, and tomorrow two people will get hitched, Gil says.
The guys all go to Frank’s Barbershop, which Bobby says is the coolest place in town. There was pool and root beer as well as barbers, so it is like a little bachelor party. Kelton gets shaved, but doesn’t get his hair cut, since Josie has it how she wants it. Evan goes back. The barber has decided to wax Evan's nose hair, and Bobby and Kelton get to pull the wax out of his nose. They do it at the same time, and Evan doesn't really flinch. He makes a joke of it and the three guys enjoy their bonding experience. Honestly, I admire how chill Evan is with this and how he is down to try something new. Looking good, they head off.
Meanwhile, the girls are heading to a salon to get their nails done. Erin has a little game planned at the salon where the bridesmaids guess answers about the bride or the groom. It is hard to write while getting their nails done, but the girls have fun doing it together. It is based on Josie’s answers, so they decide to call Kelton for his opinion. Kelly calls Kelton, and asks him “who is the most romantic?” Kelton asks her to explain it, and then says, “we haven’t gotten to experience that yet.” Eventually, Kelton says its him. Josie says she isn’t sure there was a winner, but it was a blast. Josie tells the bridesmaids that pictures start at 12 so they need to be ready. Josie says she is starting the feel the stress.
The next day, the bridesmaids are getting ready at a vacation rental Alyssa booked for the morning. Josie says she is starting to get nervous and Carlin says she looks beautiful. Sarah, the photographer, is taking detail shots and the girls all in their robes all getting ready. Meanwhile, at Josie & Kelton’s apartment, the guys are putting on ties and preparing for the day. Kelton shows them he will be wearing the watch Josie gave him for his graduation. Back at the house, Josie is ready and shows her final look to her bridesmaids. She comes down the stairs all ready and her bridesmaids ooh and ahh over her. Back at the apartment, the guys are about to head out and Kelton gets a call informing him that there was a major wreck on the interstate and traffic is at a standstill. The guys are facing a half hour to an hour delay; the girls will be delayed an hour at least. The wedding party makes it to the venue, people are starting to arrive but a significant number of people are delayed in traffic. They decide to postpone, and Josie is stressed.
After an hour passes, the guests take their seats, and it is time for the ceremony. The family lines up and Trace comes up to Josie and tells her she is so beautiful and she’s got this. Mr. Balka makes his way down the aisle alone, and Kelton really misses his mom. Bobby pulls him aside and prays with him to get him back and focused. The wedding party makes their way down the aisle, and then it is time for Josie and Gil to walk down the aisle. The guests rise, and Kelton says Josie is more beautiful than he’s ever seen her before. Kelton says he has never cried that hard in his life; Josie says to have a guy look at you like that is the sweetest moment. Gil gives Josie away on the behalf of the family and the first preacher talks about how special this is for their parents, and how parents never feel like they are finished with you. Gil takes his place to officiate the remainder of the ceremony. Josie and Kelton then take hands and make their vows; they are traditional vows. After the vows, they exchange rings and Gil tries to jokingly delay the ceremony by talking about how nice it is outside. Next, they light the unity candle and Lawson sings the song he wrote for them. After a bit of struggle getting the candle to light, they make their way back to Gil. Gil then pronounces them husband and wife, and Kelton can kiss his bride, after Gil does. Gil kisses her on the cheek, and then Josie and Kelton have their first kiss. They share a kiss and they say it was perfect. Josie and Kelton make their way up the aisle, followed by their wedding party. Josie says it all felt like a whirlwind and they cannot stop grinning as they walk away.
It is picture time and the Bates are struggling in the heat, which no one expected in October. After pictures, they go inside for the reception to spend time with their guests and to thank them for coming. Josie and Kelton cut the cake, and he is nice to her, but she shoves a big chunk into his face. They both laugh and Josie says she just could not resist, and he couldn’t be upset since she just married him. They exit the reception surrounded by sparklers and make their way to the car. The little girls will miss her but are excited to go to her house. Several siblings offer their best wishes, and Gil says they have had a fairy tale relationship and they got to have a day that was over the top.
*Episode 8: Newlyweds: Rookies vs. Pros
In this episode, the married couples are asked questions by one of their siblings. Carlin asks questions to Erin & Chad and Zach & Whitney. Lawson asks questions to Josie & Kelton and Michael & Brandon. Ellie asks questions to Tori & Bobby.
Whitney accused Zach of cheating and putting the same answer as her for question 10, but Zach says he can’t say what he really thinks it is, and she then remembers and agrees he can’t say it (it’s about sex y’all š). Carlin goes “One of those non-G-rated things that we don’t talk about on a family show?” and Whitney says, “Oh yeah, baby!” The two then fist bump. Carlin is scandalized. The episode concludes there.
*Episode 9: A Latte Love!
Josie and Kelton leave their wedding surrounded by sparklers, and they cannot believe they get to drive away by themselves for the first time. Josie says that was the craziest day in the world. The first few nights they spend in driving distance—Asheville, NC. They go to a little cabin in the woods of Asheville. Josie is glad the chaos of the wedding is over, and they are both glad to not have chaperones (just a camera crew). They kiss and hug as they admire the scenery.
Since Tori is in town for the wedding, they have a shower for Tori. The theme is things she can reuse, so they decorate with baby socks, lotion bottles, etc. Gil arrives with some food and the family has turned out to decorate. Bobby and Tori love the decorations and say that this shower is making it feel so much more real that he is on his way. Bobby thanks everyone for coming and prays, and then they eat. Bobby thought husbands were invited, but only himself, John Webster and Gil are there [Evan is also there, but I guess he’s not technically a husband so Bobby can justify leaving him off the list]. Jud and Jeb inform us that boys don’t like showers, they like basketball, football, soccer, jumping off Mt. Everest with wing suits, etc. The games begin, and they all begin by drawing what they think Baby Kade will look like. They enjoy looking at the different drawings and they are all giggling. Tori is overall impressed, and she picks Carlin as the winner.
Josie and Kelton go to an espresso class at Summit Coffee in Asheville. Josie and Kelton love going on dates to coffee shops after work and are excited to take an espresso class. They taste an intense espresso and Josie says she likes her milk. Next, they try a latte: their instructor has a nice pour, but Josie struggles a little to make the latte art—it turned into a blob, she says. Josie says the latte tasted really good, and the instructor ensures her it’s the taste that matters. Josie and Kelton say they make a good team. Their next stop is a local chocolate factory, and their tour guide has them pour in beans to be roasted and shows how the beans move throughout the factory. After they see the beans being processed, they get to see it become chocolate. A new guide, a confection production manager, shows them how he makes chocolates and they get to try some freshly made chocolate pieces. Josie is grateful for Kelton’s research for this trip and for making it interesting for both of them.
Back at the baby shower, Bobby and Tori are guessing 15 things they think are in Erin’s diaper bag. Erin says there will be some surprises—Zach notes that the second kid diaper bag is different than the new mom bag, and Erin’s is a third kid bag. Erin has a hair tie, chapstick, and lotion, among other things. Chad says with Erin you never know what the game will be. Erin says he was so embarrassed he walked out, and he says he did [which means Bobby missed Chad on his earlier list as well]. Bobby beats Tori by one point, but Tori gets the candy bar anyways. Kelly thanks everyone and then they open gifts. Tori is so excited for the gifts for Kade. Whitney says Tori is beyond ready to be a mom, and it is the waiting game now. Tori said it was the most adorable baby shower ever, and she is excited she is so close.
Back in their cabin, Josie and Kelton are making bacon, egg, and cheese English muffins. They are loving being together. Kelton is excited to be in the same home at the end of the work day; Josie says she is excited to get back into life but she is enjoying having nothing to do, nowhere to be. They are going to hike Chimney Rock, which is where Kelton’s family used to always go every year. Josie says she is impressed at how good Kelton is at cooking breakfast food. Kelton says they’ll figure out all the cooking together later. They get picnic food and then head to Chimney Rock. They decide to go to the Waterfall, and they enjoy getting to see all the Fall leaves. They take a selfie by the water fall and hold hands. They are excited to go on their first hike together, and they talk about how the weather feels so much better since the heat of their wedding a couple days ago. Josie says she spoiled the secret of their honeymoon location and she told her bridesmaids. They hike Chimney Rock and they are excited to have such a beautiful place to be together. After being in NC, they will head off to the Bahamas and then the rest of their lives.
*Episode 10: A Wedding to Plan & Fun with the Fam!
Since Alyssa and Michael are still in town from Josie’s wedding, Erin has invited them to hang out and get the cousins together. They go to the Muse, which is an indoor kids’ space with toys and crafts. Chad is particularly chuffed to see Carson playing with toy tools. Kelly asks Brandon what’s going on with the book, and Brandon says they have just sent it to the editor. Brandon is waiting to hear from him to finish the art. Whitney is glad to have Alyssa’s girls getting to play with all the cousins. Whitney says it is special for them to all get together—she wishes they lived in Tennessee. Alyssa says Allie would love that. Kelly asks Michael about what’s going on with her, and she says she does a lot of travelling. Kelly asks if she thinks about moving back home to be close to the family and Kelly says she knows Chicago isn’t forever. Kelly says she knows all the kids won’t live around them, but it doesn’t hurt to hint. Kelly also jokes that she would say they need more weddings so everyone comes back more often but Gil would veto that. Alyssa says they’ll be back soon for Carlin’s, but after that, unless the boys get on it, it might be a while between weddings.
At Chad & Erin’s, Gil brings the little girls over to hang out. Erin has made pumpkin muffins which look very tasty. Kelly is glad that even after marriage the sibling bonds are close. They all make homemade cards, which Erin says she and Carlin used to do that all the time. Callie is making a birthday card for Kelly. Gil is holding Everly and grateful he doesn’t have to share her. Brooklyn wakes up and seems confused that there are so many people in her living room. Gil says Brooklyn is so funny (“Miss Personality”) and she gets right into coloring cards with the girls. Erin says right now she is living some of the best moments of her life—her little sisters are there, at a great age, and someday they might be married in another state so she wants to treasure these moments. The playdate concludes.
At Gil’s church, Gil, Lawson, Nathan and Trace are there working on getting the building ready. The boys are often busy so it is not often they are all there together. Trace, who is working with Chad, is a part time deputy sheriff and considering going full time. Kelly wants to have their first service in the new church, but Gil doesn’t know when that’ll be. Nathan has been spending a lot of time overseas working on a 911 system in the Philippines and a medical helicopter system to transport patients between islands. Nathan is planning on going to helicopter school. Lawson says he has a new album coming out, which is the best one yet. Lawson has been working with a vocal coach to push himself, and his brothers and fathers tease him for the “silly sounding” exercises he does. Kelly is hoping the church will get finished enough to have a service or a wedding for one of the older boys. Jackson says, “The older boys are doing a lot of things, [but] getting girlfriends is not one of them.” Lawson says himself and Nathan are too busy, but Trace is around and available. Gil says they are building the church debt free, which is why they are doing what they can little by little.
At Whitney’s, Whitney and Carlin are awaiting Erin and Kelly to talk wedding and making ornaments to go with Erin’s CDs. Zach also is there for the food. “The last I heard, you were thinking cathedral?” Kelly asks. “Things have since changed,” Carlin replies. “Are you still marrying Evan?” Zach teases, and Carlin gives him a look as she says “yes” and Zach says, “that’s all that really matters, you can get married anywhere.” Carlin is struggling to find something on their date and has decided on outside. Carlin is worried about the weather, which is why she didn’t want this initially. Erin says you need a good backdrop for an outdoor wedding. Erin says Chad will build a stage—the producer asks Chad if he knows what his part will be since Erin volunteered him. The stage will feature two large windows with dramatic curtains and a chandelier. Next, they all start painting ornaments with Erin. Carlin says she and Evan will have a first dance, and then she and Gil will have a dance. Kelly thinks that is precious. Kelly says their family doesn’t often dance since it can be sensual but Carlin has always wanted a Daddy-Daughter dance and there is nothing wrong with ballroom dancing—it is wholesome and they are all for it—but they should probably take classes since they don’t know how. Kelly says she wants Gil to learn so she can dance with him too. Carlin has the song and she is emotional especially because she is moving and it isn’t going to be the same. Carlin says it is all becoming real, and that she is going to be a wife. Carlin says the most important thing is that they get married and Evan says they are going to make memories whatever happens.
*Episode 11: Nashville Nursery Makeover
Tori is four weeks out from her due date, and it is time to set up the nursery. Tori has invited Erin to come decorate. Lawson, Whitney, and Kelly come too, with a gaggle of kiddos. Kelly says Tori is the cutest little pregnant lady she’s ever seen. Tori shows them the room, and Erin knows she wants an accent wall and wood elements and then Erin tried to work with what she had. Lawson says there is a spare bed and if he’s in town working then he has a good shot to be favorite uncle. Tori says having a large family is the best when there are projects because everyone will pitch in. Lawson is bringing things in from the van with the kids’ help, and he carries in a headboard Chad made for the spare bed, which Tori loves. Erin says she volunteers him for a lot of projects. Lawson and Whitney are lifting things and trying to keep Tori from lifting anything. They move dressers around to try to find a real wood one to refinish. They sit and make a list for the thrift store, and Tori looks uncomfortable. Kelly asks her if she has had signs yet, and Tori says she isn’t sure since this is her first baby. Erin and Whitney share their experiences close to birth, and Tori says at her next appointment they’ll do an ultrasound to figure out the baby’s position. Tori is grateful for so much experience. Erin is doing wall decals—small black squares of contact paper—in an attempt to add an accent wall, but no one but her can picture it. Erin cannot paint the wall because it is an apartment. The family is really unsure about this. Lawson in particular thinks it is dumb.
Back in the Knoxville area, we see Katie at Crown College cosmetology school, which Katie decided to sign up for last minute. Katie is in class for her first day of hair coloring. Kelly says Katie has a gift for makeup and hair. Josie says she has gotten some calls from Katie being scared about doing things for the first time. Katie says Josie kills color, but she isn’t sure that will be her strong point and she is nervous about doing it on people. Katie will be in the salon next semester and she is nervous. Katie says she never saw herself doing cosmetology but now she loves it. She says some of her siblings trust her, but other siblings say that she is such a prankster they’d be nervous having her cut their hair. The students practice coloring on mannequin heads. Katie says she still wants to do nursing but wants to finish cosmetology school first. Katie teases her friend about doing her hair and asks if her friend trusts her, and the friend laughs and says “maybe!”
Back with the nursery team, Erin and Tori are shopping for dƩcor items. They find some good things in the thrift store, but they start looking at clothes and toys. Zach arrives with Kaci, and starts refocusing them, but eventually they wander around to shop more. They check out and head back at get ready to start decorating.
The nursery team has a lunch break, and then begin working on various projects to try to get this project done. There is a knock on the door, and someone has sent a large bunch of balloons and flowers for Kelly’s birthday. Gil knew she would be out of town for her birthday and went all out for her. Kelly says she does better when she is away on her birthday because she gets a big present and still gets to celebrate when she comes home.
Zach walks into the room, and Erin is using a laser to place the contact paper squares on the wall. Zach asks why, and she says to get them straight. When the contact paper is finished, the family really likes the wall, and they move on to finishing touches. Bobby arrives as Tori is cooking and waiting for the finished results. Everyone heads to the room for the big reveal. Tori and Bobby really like the finished product, and Tori says she wants Erin to do the master next. Michael sent blankets for the crib and Bobby is impressed with Erin’s work and says she just has the eye for it. Tori is really thrilled with the final product, and Erin is glad she could help. Tori made a big casserole for everyone and Erin is impressed. Kelly says she will come out a week early to help Tori get ready. Gil & Kelly are so grateful to be around their family spending time together and making memories.
*Episode 12: A Newlywed Nest & Trace Put to the Test
Gil is driving Kelly and Addee to check on her new hearing aids. The hearing aids are functioning better for Addee than her old pair, she says. They then go to do a hearing test. The family explains her hearing issues are a result of her premature birth with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. They realized that when she started school she couldn’t hear, particularly she struggled to hear higher ranged female voices. Addee did not like her original hearing aids because of the feedback. Technology has improved, which means Addee is wearing them more often and she is wearing them a lot more. Addee says she feels like she is hearing better and while it is hard to tell if her speech is better, she is repeating herself less. Kelly says she is doing a lot better in school. The doctor confirms that she has normal hearing with low frequency, but with mid to high she has significant hearing loss. Her new hearing aids will bring everything to the same level. Carlin says Addee has been a lot better hearing wise since getting her new hearing aids. The doctor says her hearing loss is stable. Kelly says the biggest stride is that she is more confident and feels good about herself right now.
At Josie & Kelton’s new apartment, her friend Samantha is coming over to help Josie decorate. Her friend helps her hang some shelves. Whitney arrives and is excited to see Josie decorating. Josie says she likes bohemian style, and she wants the dĆ©cor to be modern and different. Josie says she prefers muted colors while Samantha likes bright colors. The family tries to describe a boho style—baggy, braids, etc.—and Ellie says, “Are you sure it’s boho? I’m pretty sure its hobo.” Whitney has to run but they agree to send her pictures. Josie says making your home your own is so fun and the two friends are satisfied with their work.
At the main house, the Bates are going on a surprise adventure. The little boys are trying to guess what it is. Kelly says it is important to do activities with the younger kids so they don’t get lost in the shuffle. They are going with Jeb and Jud to a rock-climbing gym. They are excited to try a new activity and they hope it will get Jeb’s energy out. Jeb and Jud both take to climbing right away. Gil also joins them on the wall and heads down. The older boys say their parents act like they’re 25 with Jud and Jeb. Nathan says Kelly is a grandmother now, and grandmothers shouldn’t climb rocks. Luckily, Kelly ignores her sons and gives the wall a try. She is unsure about her harness the first time but makes it safely down. Kelly says when you are on the wall, you feel high even if the walls are little from the ground. Callie says her mom hates roller coasters and anything that takes you a little bit off the ground. Still, she did try it, and good for her. They decide to move to the bigger walls—and they are large and imposing. Judson tries a bigger one and Kelly & Gil are delighted that he tried it. About halfway up the bigger wall, he gets nervous but Gil & Kelly encourage him to finish. He regains his nerve and makes it all the way to the top and then climbs down. Gil says Jud is going to be a great tree worker and Kelly says Gil had an ulterior motive for this activity.
Trace has been getting involved with the Reserve Sheriff program and the Chief allows him to do a ride along with Zach. Zach is happy to mentor him and Trace is excited to feel like a real cop. Zach says being a good cop is about opening your eyes and paying attention to things. Trace says he is learning from different officers and says that since Zach got East Tennessee Officer of the Year last year, he wants to learn from the best. Zach says he isn’t the best, and that no officer is the best, but that he learned from a lot of great guys. Trace says he is thinking about going full time, but now he is spending time working with Chad to make money to get financially stable before marriage. Zach said he didn’t work on his finances when he was Trace’s age, and he could have been on firmer footing at an earlier age. Zach says you pull over people when there is a safety concern—either to the public or the driver. Zach says seatbelts really do prevent injuries in wrecks and so they are important. Zach pulls over a truck for a child not wearing a seatbelt; Trace is nervous for this first traffic stop. Trace says when he started this he thought it would be awesome, chasing bad guys and all the action, but a lot more goes into it. Zach writes a ticket and Trace complains about paperwork. Trace says everything else is fun though. He isn’t sure he is ready for the amount of paperwork. Zach says there are “honest criminals”—people who really just keep to themselves but engage in misdemeanors or recreational drug use—or other criminals who are focused on themselves and don’t care about hurting people. Zach says the second ones are rare, but you can’t tell the difference right away. Trace is really enthusiastic about some aspects of the job, like arresting people, but realizes he has something good going on with Chad and he isn’t sure what the right decision is. Zach says he is impressed with Trace, he is attentive and has a big heart, and he would make a great law enforcement officer or anything else he would choose to do in life.
*Episode 13: A Proposal to Remember & a Baby on the Way
Kelly is having a family meeting to discuss Tori’s approaching due date and Kelly’s plan to go join her for the birth. Carlin is also going to the birth, so Katie will be in charge (along with the older boys) of the house. She says she can handle it. Kelly and Carlin are going to have their bags packed and ready to go when they get the call.
Chad & Erin are celebrating their fifth anniversary at Whitestone Inn, which is where they got engaged. They are excited to go back to this place and they are staying in a large suite. Chad has a little fifth anniversary package on the bed to surprise Erin, and they are both excited for their little get away.
Back at the main house, Kelly and the kids are playing a version of “Mother May I?” called “Granny May I?” They have the Paine kids with them as well as Jud and Jeb. Kelly says she loves being Granny, although Gil says he still doesn’t really feel like a grandfather. Gil says they had 7 kids when he was 31, and 9 when Kelly was 31, and they have 3 when Chad is 31 and are off to a good start. Kelly asks the kids if they want to play with PlayDoh. Kelly says seeing her kids trying to keep the romance alive and make time for each other reminds her of Gil and herself at their age—although their budget was tighter, Gil jokes.
Erin & Chad are having a private cooking lesson with Chef Tim to make some upscale country food: a seared chicken breast and portobello cream gravy. Chad cleans the mushrooms and then the chef brings them over to the stove to start the chicken. Erin says it is neat to work with a Chef who does recognizable southern food with a twist. Erin & Chad love the finished product, and they thank Chef Tim.
It is Bradley’s fourth birthday party at Oak’s Farm. They are going on a hayride first,, before enjoying more fall activities. At the end of the hay ride, they go pick out a pumpkin. During this scene, Jud is wearing a blurred MAGA hat. He picks a big pumpkin. The kids all get their pumpkins and then it is time for dessert and gifts. Kelly says Bradley lights up a room, he is full of energy and so sweet and sensitive. Nathan says that since Bradley is the oldest grandchild, he thinks he is the king of the grandchildren. Bradley himself says, “I’m Granny’s favorite.” Zach asks why he is the favorite, and Bradley says, “because I am so good-looking.” Bradley opens some gifts, including trucks and a football from Kelton. Whitney says she remembers seeing her mom get excited when planning parties for her and now as a mom it is so much more exciting to plan for her son and get to see his reactions.
Back at the Inn, Erin & Chad walk over to the little Chapel on the Inn’s property. They spent time in it before they got engaged. Erin gives Chad his Bible recovered in leather and Erin says one of her favorite things about Chad is that he journals, and takes time to reflect, and you can go back into his life about 10-15 years past with his journals. Erin says, “So as long as you’re living, I will buy you a journal every time you run out.” Chad says this is one of his favorite gifts from her, and he has a gift for her too, but they have to take a little trip to get there. Just like the engagement trip, they come out of the chapel and there is a horse and carriage waiting for them. Just like last time, they are let off at the gazebo where they got engaged. Both of them reminisce about that day and there are flowers in the gazebo waiting for her. There is a little box by the flowers and there are two little rings—one from the kids and one from Chad—since she has poured her life into their lives and his. Erin says she feels like a princess and that Chad is the most wonderful man, and the rings are a sweet reminder. She says it has really been the best five years of her life.
*Episode 14: Ready or Not, Baby Kade is on His Way!
This is part one of the season finale, so it will be continued next episode.
At the main house, the Bates guys are packing for a boys outing to surprise Zach with a guy’s trip for his 30th birthday. Kelly will be at home, unless Tori gives her a call and then she will go to her. Kelly tells them all to be safe and says she will call if anything happens. Jud and Jeb are really excited for the guys trip. They are going to a cabin in Brimstone and will be going muddin’. They arrive at the cabins and the guys all think they are cool, but they wanted to get out into the mud. Zach says since Nathan is on the trip, they need to have a safety meeting since Nathan is dangerous. They get out on the trail in four wheelers with helmets and seatbelts and they are excited to get riding in the mud. Isaiah and Nathan are tearing up a muddy patch, and Zach jokes that he knows why Nathan isn’t married. The rest of the guys start joining in and getting muddy and it is fun. Jud, Jeb, and Gil are in their own four-wheeler, and Judson tells him to go fast into the puddles and Gil accidentally flips them. They are ok, the little guys are delighted and they quickly right the vehicle. After they talk through the flip, the guys go back to muddin’ and have a great time. They finish up and take a muddy photo. Jeb is telling Gil he needs to call mom so he can tattle on Gil. Gil takes out the phone, and finds that Kelly is calling them, and Tori is in the early part of labor. Tori is having a hard tell being able to tell what is labor and what is Braxton Hicks. Kelly tells him not to leave yet, and she will update him as he goes.
At Tori’s, Kelly is filming the preparations to go to the hospital and check that Tori is in labor. Tori thinks this might be the real thing.
Meanwhile, the guys are going skeet shooting. If you aren’t familiar, skeet shooting is shooting at clay targets thrown into the air. The guys talk about safety and then Lawson says they will be playing knock out: the first person in line (Jackson) will shoot at the target, and if he misses, the next person (Trace) will try. If Trace hits it, Jackson is out, and so on. After the game, the guys get bored and all just take shots at the skeet. They finish their game, and it is time for dinner.
The girls have snuck up to Brimstone and decorated the cabin for Zach’s birthday. He is surprised to arrive back and see the decorations. Meanwhile, the middle boys and Gil have gone in together on a gift for Zach. It is an Apple Watch. Zach is so excited to have one of his own. Nathan says it was special for the guys to do that for Zach. Bradley finds a cake in the fridge, and the guys take it out to celebrate. In a talking head, Whitney says that it is a big birthday for him and she can’t believe she is married to a 30-year-old. Gil is thinking he might be heading to Nashville tonight.
At the hospital, Kelly is telling Tori how well she is doing and saying she has a high pain tolerance. Tori has been talking to Erin all day and she was discouraged that the hospital didn’t think she was really in labor. Tori stands up to walk, and as she stands, her water breaks and it is official. She’ll be admitted. Tori says an epidural will slow it down but she doesn’t care. Kelly tells her it won’t slow it down too much and says she doesn’t blame her for wanting an epidural. Kelly jokes that she should tell them to give it to her as fast as they can so she can get her money’s worth out of it. The contractions are picking up since her water broke, so Tori wants to get in a room, get an epidural and try to rest a little before Kade arrives.
Gil gets the call from Kelly saying Tori is officially in labor. Gil and Lawson are going to go pick up Erin and Carlin for the birth and head to the hospital. Tori is a little uncomfortable and then starts having a contraction. Bobby is resting and Kelly is quietly talking Tori through her pain. Gil, Lawson, Carlin, Erin, and Everly are in the car trying desperately to make it in time. Erin is in her curlers and throws a baby blanket over her head to hide it. Nathan says this is three of the most dramatic Bates children in a car, and he couldn’t imagine what it was like. The siblings are on the phone with their mom, trying to get her to tell Tori to wait. Lawson tells Tori it will be fine and she should listen to his music. Gil laughs at Lawson.
Tori is feeling pressure, and she is excited and scared. The episode cuts off here, to be continued next week.
*Episode 15: It’s a Boy & Maybe One More?
It is 4am and Gil, Carlin, Erin, and Lawson are road tripping to Nashville. They are worried about missing Kade’s birth but Kelly says they won’t. Erin has curlers in her hair and the family is making their way.
Tori is four to five centimeters dilated and is uncomfortable from Kade being so low. However, Kelly says there are lots of good signs of her progressing nicely.
The car arrives at the hospital and Lawson is sleeping in the car. He tells them to wake him up when the baby is there. They park the car.
Bobby says it is hard not being able to help more; he is just trying to be there for her. The sisters walk in and Tori is excited to see them. Gil’s role, Kelly says, is to be the prayer warrior. But this time he is also watching Everly. Tori and Erin talk about how great epidurals are.
Kelly thinks that, from the look on her face, Tori may need to push. Kelly thinks it is time for the nurse and Tori is at 10 centimeters, so it is baby time. Erin is very excited, Tori is a little confused but Bobby is there praying with her while the family is celebrating with her. Tori asks Bobby if he is scared and he says he isn’t but that it is a huge moment. Tori is worried about dropping him since he will be slippery. As Tori pushes, Bobby is right there by her side and her family is supporting her. She is worried Kade didn’t move at all but everyone tells her he did and she is doing great. Tori said she was excited, anxious, and scared and very worried that she couldn’t do it.
Tori is encouraged by her family and she does a big push and Kade is here. Kade was OP, or face up, which meant they needed one big force to get him out. Tori is still nervous and asking lots of question about whether or not he is okay. But eventually she settles and is so in love with Kade. Carlin notes that Erin just has to “take the moment” and has Kade hold her finger while Tori and Bobby are looking at him together. Bobby goes over and starts talking to him quietly and holds him for the first time. Bobby says everything they do from here on out has such huge significance because Kade will be looking up to him and it is remarkable.
Gil arrives to meet Kade and shows Everly the baby. Gil says he hopes he never losses the wonder of getting to meet a new little grandbaby.
It is 6 weeks later, and they’re having a Christmas get together at the main Bates house. Tori and Bobby have brought Kade to meet the rest of the family. Addee immediately wants to hold him and that begins the pass around. Tori said it was fun getting to show him off. Gil has a surprise for everyone as well. Brooklyn opens it up, and it is a dog bowl—and the surprise is a little chocolate lab puppy: Johnny Jr. The Bates’ dog Johnny passed away over the past year and the family missed him dearly. The little kids are so excited to see the puppy. They joke that Kade has another Bates baby to grow up with. The family then makes gingerbread houses, which is something Michael and Brandon always love to do, and Michael says it is great to come back and see every new little niece and nephew. Kelton and Josie come a little later and offer a gift for Gil and Kelly. It is a onesie and it says “Baby Balka Est. 2019” The family is all excited and celebrates the new baby on the way. The Balkas say they weren’t planning on this happening so quickly and they are excited and terrified. Josie says she is due in July. Kelly says she is excited for grandbaby #10. Gil calls the family together to pray. Gil and Kelly said they are so full of joy and excitement, and everything is wonderful.
Part B: Air Date September 19, 2019 to November 21, 2019
*Episode 16: A Very Medieval I Love You Day
It is Valentine's Day, and Alyssa and Kelly are cleaning the kitchen of a cabin while they talk about games. Josie is pregnant, Carlin is engaged, and there is a lot going on. Whitney, her kids, and Carlin arrive at the cabin. Alyssa says it is a special time to come home and catch up with everyone.
The couples dinner will be upstairs in the cabin and will have traditional Valentine’s Day decor. Downstairs will have a castle theme. Kelly reminds us that they do themes to remember a lesson, and recalls the Farm theme (family focused, particularly honoring the grandparents) and the "growing old together" theme. This year she has decided on chivalry. The boys are focused on knights and Robin Hood as well as treating ladies with class.
The rest of the family is skiing, but Whitney, Alyssa and Erin stay with their kids at the cabin with Kelly and Carlin. Carlin says Evan is coming and it never gets old anticipating his arrival. Carlin is 100 days out from her wedding and is grateful for her long engagement to give her time to get stuff done. She does not have a venue yet, and Erin says that churches are cheaper but venues are prettier. Carlin agrees that a venue is the right fit for her.
The girls set up tables and discuss Michael moving back. This weekend they will look at a house they found back in the area. Erin is excited since her and Michael were so close growing up. There is a rumor going around about Trace surprising them this year by bringing a girl he is seeing to the celebration. They expect Trace to surprise them at the Couples Dinner. The sisters agree Trace is quiet and there is a chance that is something going on there. They conclude set up.
Josie & Kelton are having their sex reveal ultrasound, but they will not be finding out the sex themselves. Josie has convinced Kelton to have a gender reveal party during Valentine's Day since everyone will be in town. The tech will write the sex in an envelope. They see a 4D picture of the baby and hear the heartbeat. Josie asks Kelton to guess and he says he doesn't know. Josie thinks it's a boy; Kelton isn't sure. Gil & Kelly are looking forward to all finding out together at the party.
As part of the celebration, a crew heads to North Carolina to go skiing. The Bates family has been enjoying these trips more often these days. At the rental store, most of the boy choose snowboards. Nathan picks skis, and Lawson tells him "real men" use boards. Trace agrees and calls it "sissy." Nathan sticks to his guns, and says they'll see who is at the bottom first. The Bates family takes to the mountain and has a blast. John is nervous the whole time he boards since he has his girls depending on him.
Nathan and Lawson are actually having a race, and they head down the mountain. Lawson says he was disadvantaged by his snowboard with no sticks. He makes excuses about how the odds were against him going into this race.
At lunch, they chat about the Couples Dinner and reminisce about when Nathan dressed as a girl for the couples table. This year they won't do this. Trace declines to comment, and then they prepare to go back out on the hill. They have a good day skiing, and it will be a new tradition, they conclude.
The couples dinner is underway, and the couples prepare to cook together. It is chicken night, and there will be chicken parmesan and one pot easy chicken. Perdue has GRACIOUSLY sponsored the Bates with some pre-breaded chicken for the chicken parm. They are super easy, they gush, and probably saved one hour. Zach does the one pot easy chicken. There is also more pre-diced chicken which Perdue has BLESSED the Bates family with, which is so easy, and Zach goes to work. Erin and Carlin make skillet chicken artichoke dip. Carlin is trying to learn to cook before her wedding. Carlin is struggling with the dip, and Zach adds more liquids to save the day. Carlin is still proud of her efforts as they complete the dish and go get ready.
The other couples arrive as they finish cooking and Evan is amazed by Carlin in her red dress. The dip is a hit. Everyone is waiting to see if there is a surprise addition to the party. Kelly kicks off the dinner by reminding them about the costume contest tomorrow. You can come "dressed or not dressed" Kelly says, causing her children to laugh. [She meant, of course, in costume or not in costume, but now I'm said there wasn't a nudist appearance].
Michael & Brandon arrive late after their drive, and everyone is thrilled to have them home. There were no surprises, and Kelly says she will surprise them next year by inviting someone for them.
Now, it’s "I Love You Day" and the costumes are out and about. Everyone looks a little different but and they take lots of photos. Michael made her dress, and her family is duly impressed and supportive of her. Lots of pictures are taken, and Trace does indeed show up with a girl. Trace says he did surprise the family with a friend. Her name is Chaney, and they met in Colorado skiing and have kept in touch since. Kelly says this is a sweet time of year to bring someone to meet the family. They ask Taryn, the photographer, and Chaney to judge together. Trace is nervous about Chaney as a judge, worried she will make enemies. Papa Bill and Mama Jane go first, and then Zach & Whitney. Zach is inspired by Mark Twain to be a cowboy in medieval times. Michael really wants to win as she never wins. Alyssa also thinks she is best dressed, and Evan & Carlin are also a big hit. Evan is fully in character. Taryn and Chaney pick prizes. Michael ends up winning, and she is so happy. Trace is impressed with Chaney's judging.
It is time for games. Costumes are removed, and the guys "joust" or hit each other with large, inflatable sticks, which immediately break. Then, they move on to the cookie face game, where you put a cookie on your forehead and have to get it to your mouth without using your hand. Then, girls have to shoot an apple off their SOs head with nerf arrows. There is a lot of "ows" and laughter during that game. It was a great time, and always nice to have a new addition.
The next day, at the clubhouse at Josie & Kelton's apartment, everyone is guessing the sex of their baby. They're a lot of boy guesses. Jackson wears a bright pink blazer to show his guess. The little girls think girl, the little boys agree. Evan says boy, Carlin says girl. Everyone writes their guess on the board. Kelton says it is hard to be the focus of attention at this party. The balloon comes out, and Josie & Kelton are nervous.
Josie holds the balloon, and Kelton guesses girl, Josie says boy, and Kelton prepares to pop the balloon. Everyone is ready to know. Kelton pops it, and it is pink. They hug, and everyone cheers. Josie is shocked it is not a boy, but she is excited to have a girl. The family reacts, but overall they are excited for their new addition. Everyone guesses the name based on the letters in a bag. Carlin gets it: Willow Kristy. Kelton says Willow means "graceful" and Josie loves it, and the name Kristy is after his mom. Mr. Balka is very touched, and so is the entire family. Kelton and his dad embrace, and then he gives Kelly and his grandparents a big hug. It is a very sweet moment. Kelly says God has big plans for this special little girl. Gil says this weekend has been full of joy, and he is so glad everyone was back together.
*Episode 17: A Blushing Bride to Be!
Carlin, Erin, and Kelly arrive at Tori's in Nashville to see Kade. Lawson is already there. They are going dress shopping as well. Kelly found a dress online that fit Carlin's vision and they are going to a store to see it. Carlin is worried about all the opinions the others will have during dress shopping. Tori says just to go with your gut, and Lawson says to go with what hides your gut. Tori is grateful for the chance to hear about Carlin’s wedding plans. Lawson and Tori start talking about everything that can go wrong with an outdoor wedding. Lawson says it’s gonna rain. Carlin gets overwhelmed and she cries at their catastrophizing. Tori feels bad at the suggestion and they head out.
Since they are in Nashville, they all go to Top Golf. Evan joins them. Erin and Lawson make a bet that Erin will beat him for $100. They start golfing and Lawson is going hard. Carlin takes a turn and is not successful, but Evan is. Erin is next, and the waiter has given her tips. She makes points on her shots. She keeps hitting it in the little hole. Erin says she does not care about winning but is enjoying her brother's annoyance. Carlin gets points and Lawson tells Evan that they’ve got to strategize. Erin keeps hitting in the close hole, but Lawson refuses to play like that. In the end, Erin beats him 65-38 and is so excited to tease him. Nathan laughs at him on the talking head couch. Everyone enjoyed the outing, and Carlin says it was a good distraction from being stressed about dress shopping.
Evan and Kelly meet in a coffee shop in Nashville to talk about honeymoon planning. Evan is in charge of the honeymoon, but he is new to trip planning. Kelly helps him do some research to make sure he does not fall into a travel scam. Evan is thinking about going to the Dominican Republic, where his sister and brother in law went. In the talking heads, the marrieds talk about how perfect their honeymoons were. Kelly shows Evan the AARP site with travel scam information. [AARP is a long time Bates sponsor]. They find a deal on the AARP website since it is trustworthy. Kelly says he is off to a good start and they think it will be a good trip.
The girls arrive at the dress shop, and it is time for Carlin to find her perfect dress. Carlin is so nervous to see the dress in person, and she thinks it might be the one. They also pull some more options just in case. Carlin tries on the dress she saw online first. She beams as she comes out in the dress. Carlin loves its and so does her family. Carlin says it is magic, but it is pink. Blush is one of the layers underneath. Carlin always imagined a white or ivory dress. She is a little unsure about the color. They decide to try on a few more. The second dress is immediately shot down in favor of the first dress. After the third dress gets another underwhelming reaction, it's back to the first dress and everyone loves it. She says she thinks it is the dress. She is glad her family and Evan's family were there for support her, and she is so excited for her wedding day.
*Episode 18: A Dance With Dad & a Wedding to Plan
Carlin has her dress and is now on the hunt for a venue. Whitney, Carlin, Kelly, and Erin are looking for venues. First up is Whitestone Inn, the inn where Chad proposed to Erin. The chapel there holds 200, but Kelly says they are expecting 600-1000 people. They say they will feed about 600-700 and see who shows up. Carlin says if about 1000 come, they might not get food, but that'll be okay because it's a party. They walk to the gazebo and show a clip of Erin's engagement. They talk about how the cake cutting could be in the gazebo. It could also be a spot for her dance, which she has dreamed of. Zach says they didn't dance growing up, but it is interesting how the family has evolved. They find a spot outside that could be good for the ceremony.
Then, they move on to the next spot, Castleton Farms. As they drive up, everyone is wowed by the beautiful venue. But Erin says there is no way they can afford this. They arrive and look around the venue and Carlin is falling more and more in love with it. They look at the ceremony space, with stairs leading down to a stage with white columns. Carlin is totally smitten. They will look at pros and cons and nail one down in the near future, Carlin says.
At the main house, Gil is setting up a project: a doghouse. Lawson talks about Johnny, the dog that grew up with them and recently passed away. Gil has recently surprised them with JJ, another chocolate lab, who is a rambunctious puppy. Gil has a prefabricated doghouse, which the family is putting together. They follow the instructions and it does not take them very long to get the doghouse together. Carlin comes out and asks Gil if he is ready for dance classes. Gil explains that dancing can lead to "bad chemistry" so the family has avoided it, but sentimental slow dancing is different. Both Gil and Carlin are worried that they will embarrass themselves. The doghouse progresses, and they get it rapidly assembled. The family shows it to JJ, and he seems to like it. The family all notes it went smoothly (alluding this is due to Lawson's absence.)
Michael & Brandon have been praying about going back to Tennessee for Michael to go to nursing school. To that end, they are looking at the rental home of close family friends. They look around the house and realize it is quite a bit smaller than they are used to. It is cute, but they are concerned about the size. Michael says this is bigger than their first apartment, and it would be easier to keep clean. Brandon would be working remotely so he will need an office in the house. Michael says she likes the area and houses tend to go fast. Both Erin and Kelly are so excited she will be back in the area. Michael says she is really looking forward to being close again.
Carlin, Gil, and Kelly go to the dance studio. Neither of them know quite what to expect. The dance teacher meets them, and they quickly start class. All the family say it is impressive that Carlin got Gil to take classes with her. Kelly says they used to avoid all dancing, but Carlin wanted this wholesome, thoughtful dance and they know it is a dream of hers. They get a box step down, and Carlin says they look like beginners. Carlin didn't realize how much work this would be and says she is a little stressed.
The dance instructor has them try a "rotating box to the left," and they are feeling better and more confident now that they are moving around the floor. Kelly learns the step from the instructor as they go. Kelly says they look good and there's hope. Gil says he doesn't have a lot of rhythm. Next, they instructor teaches Carlin how to do a spin. When they get that, both Kelly and Carlin are thrilled. Gil says it is worth doing if it makes her feel that special. Carlin says it is almost a goodbye, a nod to her next phase in life, and she isn't going to be coming home every night anymore. The dance starts looking pretty good, and Carlin says this lesson is a great memory and she is glad they did this. The instructor invites them to come back, and Kelly suggests a group date with the couples. He also invites Carlin to bring Evan for their first dance prep.
*Episode 19: A Baby Grand Plan!
At Castleton Farms, Carlin arrives with her mom and Erin to meet with the wedding coordinator. Kim, the Bates wedding coordinator, is also there. They have the venue locked down, and it is time to start nailing down the details. The family loves the beautiful grounds, and they think they can put 700 people on the lawn there. Kelly asked for the rain plan, and there are two covered spaces they can use. Carlin says her family keeps reminding her of the rain, but they are all praying hard for the sun. They see the covered reception space and same centerpieces which they love. They talk about where the dancing will be (back by the ceremony space). Everyone is looking forward to the big day.
At Tori & Bobby’s, they are preparing to move back to the Bate’s family. She has been packing, and her family arrives to help move them out. Bobby says his first goal was to be in full time ministry, and now he just wants to be there for his wife and son. Gil and Bobby arrive with the truck, and Tori is worried that it is too small. However, the family gets to work packing it in. Bobby says he knew two things: the company told him it was the right size truck, and that they had a secret weapon: Gil. They manage to clear the apartment out, and they have the truck totally stuffed, but they fit it all. They take a picture in front of the truck, and then begin the actual move, which will hopefully go as smoothly as the packing.
At the new church building, Gil and the youngest kids arrive to see the progress. There is still a lot left to go, but it has flooring, walls, a stage, pulpit, and pews—they are almost ready to have church here. An important missing piece is the piano. The delivery people arrive with the piano, and all the kids are excited. It is a baby grand piano, and the little girls—Callie in particular—love how beautiful it is. Gil walks out with the delivery men. Callie sits right away and starts to play. Gil walks into her playing, and he said it was a really special moment to walk in and just hear her play. Gil is close to tears at the sentimental moment. They remember Erin as their pianist, and then Carlin stepping up to fill that role, and now that she is getting married, it could be Callie who is their next pianist.
Kelly, Carlin, Erin, and Whitney arrive at Miss Renee’s for alterations. They are excited about the venue and the dress. Carlin tries on the dress and is worried about it being too big. Renee gets to pinning and asks about bridesmaids. Carlin says she is doing a mixture of springy colors. Whitney and Erin are jealous of her dress, and Carlin says theirs were beautiful too, and it’s what’s inside the dress that counts anyway. They complete the fitting, and Carlin is so excited.
*Episode 20: Shall We Dance?
Chad, Erin, and Trace are going to a client’s house for a project. Erin says she really enjoys designing, and one couple has hired them to work together. Erin cannot believe her passion is becoming a job. Chad and Erin are excited to work together—"it’s like eating ice cream for all three meals,” Chad says. Erin is designing a nursery for this couple, and they show them different color options and look at the space. Chad and Erin are excited for the opportunity, and Erin says they should be done in just a couple weeks. Zach says Erin sometimes bites off more than Chad can chew, but the couple is confident they can make it work. Nathan says the whole family is glad they’re turning their passion into a business.
Nathan and Katie are going for a flying lesson, as Katie is working on her pilot’s license in addition to her cosmetology studies. Nathan says Katie is academic and good at school. The family is surprised that Katie wants to become a pilot, especially based on her driving abilities. Katie takes off and she says it has been a while since she has flown. She also says Nathan is a great teacher, patient and with a lot of confidence in her. They enjoy the initial flight, and then start to practice a stall. Basically, a stall is when the pilot points the nose of the plane up and puts all the power towards the sky. Nathan talks her through it, and she gets through the drill. Katie did an inadvertent flip, but they get out of it, and then Nathan talks her through what happened. Katie says flying is something she was not initially interested in, but it is something she loves even though it takes practice and hard work. Carlin is a little dubious about her becoming a pilot.
Back at the dance studio, Gil, Kelly, Carlin, Evan, Erin, and Chad are at dance class. The more experienced dancers do well, and Erin & Chad laugh and have some difficulty. The instructor has them change partners—Kelly with Chad, Evan with Erin, and Gil with Carlin, so Chad & Erin can learn from the others. Gil says he is nervous about dancing because he doesn’t want dancing to be universally accepted, but daddy-daughter and husband-wife dances are sweet in the right settling. They learn how to add in a turn, and they keep trying a few new steps to add into their dancing. They are excited about picking up more steps. Carlin says this was the first dance class with Evan, and all their firsts have been really sweet memories and will keep getting sweeter.
At Josie & Kelton’s, Josie and Tori are hanging with Kade as Kelton and Bobby arrive home from work. Bobby and Kelton have always been close, and now they work together. Bobby says they have an idea: Kelton and Bobby will watch Kade, to give Kelton some practice with a baby, and their wives can go out to dinner. Kelton says he is nervous about the responsibility that comes with being a father, and that his habits and behaviors, good or bad, will rub off on each other. Bobby say Kade is rolling over now, and gushes about the first time he did it. They cheer him on as he rolls over, and Kade looks at them dubiously. At the restaurant, Tori asks about Josie’s pregnancy, and they bond about their experiences. Back at the apartment, Bobby talks Kelton through a diaper change, but Kade rolls over on him and Bobby is embarrassed. Kelton jokes that leak prevention is his line of work and that they’ve got this. Diaper change completed, the guys high five.
Two weeks later, Erin & Chad are finishing their project for their clients. Chad has put up an accent wall, painted the crib and dresser, and the room is all set up. The clients are impressed with their cozy new nursery. Erin says she hopes they keep doing this, but things are busy with three kids, the new dress boutique, and Chad’s construction business. Chad says it has been fun and they hope to see where it goes.
*Episode 21: New Beginnings
At Zach & Whitney’s, Erin arrives with Carlin, Chad, and Everly to discuss their boutique. They are waiting to hear back from the state with their business license before placing their first order. They discuss an April launch, assuming that the business license comes through in time. They talk about return policy, and they don’t know anything about ordering sizes. They are excited about working together, and even if it doesn’t work out, they will have fun trying.
Kelly takes the three little girls to a nature center to do some ropes courses. Kelly says she has been busy with the wedding, and she felt like she needed some time with the younger girls. Lawson reminds us that Kelly is not the biggest fan of more adrenaline seeking stuff. They do the first course, and Callie goes first. She is nervous to go first but does a great job. Everyone follows her lead. They arrive at a point where Callie panics. Her sisters immediately encourage her, and she finishes strong. Kelly struggles through that same obstacle, and jokes that next time they should just get ice cream. Kelly’s daughters encourage her through it. They all talk about how Kelly always does things with her kids, and she just wants to be right there with them, even if it isn’t her favorite thing. They zip line down, and high five to celebrate.
At Bible Baptist Church, it is time for Carlin’s wedding shower. They are so excited to be getting close to the big event. Carlin is also touched that this is the first event in the new church. The family greets the arrivals. Gil welcomes everyone and says this is getting real. Then Zach calls Gil & Kelly, Evan’s parents, and Mama Jane & Papa Bill up for quick advice. Kelly tells them not to stop being affectionate. Gil says to always put the other person first. Mrs. Stewart says always kiss goodnight, and never go to bed angry. Mr. Stewart says to always have date nights. Papa Bill says, “listen to what she says.” And then, “if she’s not happy, you’re not gonna have a good time.” Then, Carlin and Evan open gifts and thank everyone. Carlin says she was trying to watch and take everything in. Carlin opens one gift from the mother of her piano student, who painted the lighthouse where Evan proposed. Carlin thanks everyone for coming, and says she needs to take it all in for a moment, and how thankful she is for everyone in that room. She tears up and jokes that this is a wedding preview. She says she cannot wait to become Evan’s wife. Gil is sad she is moving out of the house, but excited that she will be close.
On Sunday, the Bates family fill their new church for the Dedication Service. Carlin says this was one of Gil’s biggest dreams, to build his own church. Gil says God was involved from the beginning doing miraculous things for that church. The Stewart family sings, and Gil tears up. Carlin is touched they sing and also tears up. Gil preaches, and then they all pray together. Erin says they are happy for Gil. Gil says that first big meeting was a dream come true.
*Episode 22: Baby Mamas and Bridesmaids Drama
Kelly is taking Whitney out for lunch to try to plan a college graduation party for Carlin. Carlin doesn’t want a party with the wedding coming up, and so Kelly wants to put together a family gathering to mark the occasion. However, Evan probably cannot come as he can’t take time off of work. They eat and make plans as Whitney gets a phone call. Kelly is intrigued and asks if it was Zach. Whitney says it is Dr. Vick, and that she is pregnant and it looks good. Just Whitney & Zach know and he was calling to tell her the gender. Kelly is delighted. Whitney says she wants to surprise Zach with the gender. They make plans for surprising Zach with a gender reveal at the party.
Josie & Kelton are at home, preparing to set up the nursery. Two friends come over to help Josie since she cannot really decorate on her own. For her birth plan, Josie says she will have a midwife in a hospital setting. They put up curtains and discuss the amount of pink in the room. Kelton arrives home and begins assembling the crib. It requires a lot of assembly and Kelton struggles for a bit but they get it put together. Kelton is impressed with the nursery, and he cannot wait to bring Willow home.
Now, it is time for Carlin’s graduation party, and she is excited to celebrate with her family. Everyone gets their food, and Whitney says they are planning on announcing their pregnancy at the party. She was a little worried because it was Carlin’s day, but she is also worried about Kelly keeping the secret for much longer. To reveal the gender, Whitney has a cup full of confetti. Kelly will pretend to drink coffee from the cup—which Whitney notes is odd, because she usually does not drink coffee, but hilarious. And then Kelly will throw the confetti when Whitney makes the announcement.
Kelly calls the family to share praises for Carlin. Lawson goes first. He says she is an energy giver who makes things happen and she will be successful. They ask if anyone else has anything else to say and suggests Zach should talk. Zach congratulates Carlin and then says Whitney was talking to Kelly the other day and let something slip, and since Kelly can’t keep a secret, they are going to announce their pregnancy. Whitney then announces: “and it’s a girl!” and Kelly tosses the confetti. Carlin gives Whitney a big hug as the family celebrates. Zach is stunned at the announcement. Whitney says they have been reflecting on their lives together and trying to bask in every moment and not rush things.
At Zach & Whitney’s, the bridesmaids have gathered for Renee to come and figure out dresses. Renee arrives with Carlin’s dress and Carlin says they have dress problems but Renee says it will be fine. Carlin has them all line up and they complain about the fit of their dresses. Carlin is stressed about making sure they work. Renee soothes the fears and talks through each dress to make it work. Next, it is time for Carlin to come out in her dress. Everyone loves the dress. Whitney says it totally looks like Carlin. Carlin has a magical moment and says she cannot wait to walk down the aisle and see Evan waiting for her.
*Episode 23: Home is Where the Heart Is!
In Norris, TN, Lawson and Nathan arrive at Michael & Brandon's new home. They have some furniture and the mower. Michael is going to nursing school at Tennessee College of Applied Technology, so the Keilen’s have moved back. The family gets to working unloading the furniture; they unroll a rug and set up some sofas. Brandon is still working in Chicago and Michael came early to set up. Gil & Kelly are there helping as well. Kelly points out a wood stove in the living room, and Gil offers Michael free firewood. Gil & Kelly are delighted to have their kids moving back—both Tori & Bobby and Brandon & Michael. Callie is particularly excited to have Michael there to teach her to cook and to spend time with her. Michael is excited to join in on the couples date nights that Gil & Kelly host as well as spending more time with her little siblings. Michael says family is one of God's most precious gifts and she is excited to catch up with her siblings.
At Carlin & Evans’ future home, also in Norris, TN, Evan, Carlin, and Warden are working on setting up the house so it is ready when they come back from the honeymoon. They are in the rental house that Michael & Brandon rejected in a previous episode. Evan & Carlin are thinking of the best way to set up their kitchen and Carlin is overwhelmed. The family debates the difference between a pot and a pan. As they are unpacking, they practice their wedding song, and forget some of the words. They need to get this finished, as it is wedding week. Carlin says she might cry though the whole song, and Evan jokes he might need to write a solo if she is crying the whole time. Even though it is work, the song is important to them. Carlin is nervous about it getting finished in time.
At a warehouse, the Bates ladies are doing a photoshoot for their dress boutique. Carlin isn't sure why they started the boutique right before her wedding, but they are working hard to have more styles in the boutique. Whitney says that she, Carlin, and Erin are the owners but they love having their sisters come model for them. Whitney says it is fun to dress up and take pictures. They joke that modeling is awkward and they attempt to make it work. Hands in pictures are awkward, they agree. Carlin says the more they do it, the better they get and they are trying to be more chill about it. At the end of the session, Kelly is explaining what she will do for the wedding tomorrow. Carlin says there are a lot of last minute details, but she is trying to stay focused on one thing at a time. Carlin says she is in marriage mode. Carlin calls Evan, who is struggling to set up their WiFi. Evan says moving this week has hit him hard—he realizes how big this is. They need to get their marriage license. Carlin wants to match to get their license and tells him to change. Carlin says that they almost forgot the license but it is a big step—almost like becoming adults.
Carlin & Evan head to pick up their marriage license with Gil. They give their IDs over and share identifying information with the clerk. Carlin gives over her parents’ names and messes up Gil's (his first name is William) and then they give their socials. They said they did premarital counseling, which saves them $60 on the license, which Evan pays for (although Carlin jokes Gil should as a gift). Gil says he is happy, but it’s hard to let go. Kelly says it hasn't hit her yet. Carlin & Evan are excited to be so close to their big day.
*Episode 24: A Wedding Worth the Wait
It is two days until the wedding, and the Bates family is finishing up Carlin's list. Lawson wrote a song for Carlin & Evan to dance to, and they check in with him about the song. Carlin & Evan have also not practiced their dance in a while, and as Lawson sings, Evan & Carlin laugh and try to remember their dance. Trace and Elijah are watching and laughing as this all goes down. Evan & Carlin watch a video of dance class to refresh their memories. Trace says they will need a lot more practice before Saturday. Carlin says as long as they get the ending right—the dip and kiss—it will be alright. Evan says they realized they weren't ready.
At the nail salon, Joy and Carlin are going to get their nails done. Carlin says it is sweet to have some time with her best friend before her wedding. Joy says Carlin will be the most beautiful bride, and Evan will die when he sees her on the wedding day. They get pedicures (French toes) and Erin and Tori also arrive to get their nails done. Carlin tells Erin she is worried about the duet, which Carlin & Evan will sing. Erin says they will practice it tonight. Carlin says the countdown is on and double-checking things is so important but she is also trying to enjoy each moment. Carlin shows Erin and Tori pictures of her hair trial, and Tori and Erin don't love it. Erin says Carlin should have a flower crown and calls her Aunt Kim to see if she can do it. Kim says she doesn't have the materials to do it but she will look into it.
At the venue, Carlin & Evan are practicing their song before the rehearsal dinner. Carlin doesn't know it and she is worried about squeezing it in at the last minute. This is the rehearsal and Carlin is still learning the words. Evan wrote the song and knows it pretty well but he is very nervous since he has recently finished it and doesn't know it 100%. Evan makes a plan that if Carlin is crying, he will sing the second verse. Carlin says she has a lot of visions for her wedding but she is worried she bit off more than she can chew. Carlin & Evan agree that all that really matters is they end up married.
It is rehearsal day, and it is 94 degrees outside. Carlin has a 24-person wedding party—the largest so far—which means she didn't exclude anyone but it is hard to figure out where they all stand. Then, Carlin & Evan step up in front of Gil. Carlin says they have waited so long for their first kiss, and it was worth it, but 24 hours can't come soon enough. They practice walking everyone out and it is time for the dinner.
Evan is excited for the rehearsal dinner in the air-conditioned bar, which his family has set up. Carlin loves the food and decorations at the dinner. They serve lasagna and everyone enjoys it. Carlin & Evan are called up, and Carlin tears up as she thanks everyone for coming. She thanks her parents for raising her and teaching her to love God, and her siblings for being there for her. The family tears up at how meaningful this is for them. Evan makes the next speech and talks about how hard it will be to move away from his family. He starts crying as it hits him that he is really moving away. Then, Evan's parents take a moment to speak, the dinner concludes and now it is time for the big day.
It is wedding day. Ethan and Evan arrive at Castleton Farms and begin preparing for the big day. They have to get ready for pictures. The big bridal party is all getting ready for the big day. Carlin is emotional, and Whitney keeps telling her not to start crying already. The bridesmaids take robe pictures, and then it is time to put dresses on. Evan is enjoying the groom's suite, which is the ultimate man cave. The photographer is ready for them, and it is about to go down. Back with the bridesmaids, Carlin reveals her dress to her bridesmaids. They all talk about how stunning she looks, and then take pictures with the bridesmaids. Carlin takes a picture with each, and sweet Callie is emotional about Carlin leaving the house. Carlin says she got close with the little girls over the past couple years. Aunt Kim has come up with a flower crown, and they add the veil.
Carlin has a first look with her dad, and Carlin cries as she walks up. Gil cries when he sees her. Carlin cries as she gives Gil his tie, which has a patch on the back that says, "I'll always be your little girl." Carlin is crying as she recounts this moment in the talking head, and it is clearly an important moment for her.
The time has arrived for the ceremony, and Evan's parents are seated. Erin tells Carlin she should be taking everything in, and then Whitney, Erin, and Carlin say a quick prayer. Erin's prayer makes her cry, and Callie is crying again as well. The groom and best man take their places, and then the rest of the wedding party makes their way in. Lawson says he opposed an outdoor wedding because he was scared it would rain, but really it turned out beautiful. The flower girls and ring bearers make their way down the aisle, and then it is time for Gil and Carlin's big moment. Evan sees her for the first time, and he cries and she walks down the aisle. Carlin says she is looking into her future, and it is absolutely perfect. Gil gives Carlin away, and the first preacher welcomes everyone to the wedding. Gil then takes over and tries to keep his remarks short due to the heat. He tells Evan to treasure Carlin like she is valuable and tells Carlin to treat Evan like he is superman and he will be. He concludes with telling them that they should let nothing come between them. Then they switch preachers again for the vows. They go with the traditional vows. Evan goes, and Carlin goes next and is crying at the end.
Now, it is time for the song. They are so nervous for the duet, and they sing together. Evan starts the song, and Carlin says there is a connection when they are singing together and you forget about everyone watching. They sing the duet, and Gil says this is one of the most special parts of the whole wedding. They finish the song, and everyone talks about how great it was. They then exchange rings. The preacher announces them husband and wife, and then says: "let us pray." Everyone is surprised, but apparently this preacher likes to mess with people who have saved their first kiss for their wedding day. The couple laughs, the preacher prays, and then they finally can kiss. As they kiss, the preacher says: "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder" and then introduces the Stewarts. They leave the ceremony and sneak off for a private moment. The wedding party exits, and then it is time for the reception.
The reception starts, and Evan & Carlin cut the cake. Everyone knows these two are too playful to not have fun with the cake, and there is a little smooshing. Next, it is time for the speeches. Ethan goes first, and then Erin and Whitney go. Erin jokes that she thinks Carlin and Evan will be the couple to have the most children. She's made her contribution—four is getting close—and then everyone stops, and Erin announces she is pregnant. Erin says it was an accidental announcement. She then finishes her speech.
It is now time for the dancing. Evan & Carlin go first, and Lawson plays for them as they dance. They do a nice job, and it clearly a special moment for Carlin. They finish the dance with a kiss, and in Carlin's words, it was "fireworks." Then Carlin has her dance with her dad, and he says it was a special moment. Michael said it was special that he did that knowing how much work her dad put in and how much it meant to Carlin. Carlin says the dance was really about all the time they practiced. Carlin & Evan then have a sparkler departure. Evan & Carlin thank everyone for making their dreams come true. Their family is excited to see what the future holds.
