Some Quick Notes Before Counting On Season 10:
There are two major trigger warnings for this season, which will be marked throughout the episodes:
The Seewalds arrive at the main house, and talk about how crazy 2018 was: two new in-laws and three new babies joined the family, and Jessa is expecting. The Seewald boys are growing and Jessa just wants a nap. Kendra & Joe are enjoying watching Garrett grow up. Josiah & Lauren had a miscarriage, and Abbie & John got married.
Michelle & Jim Bob are watching all the grandkids while the couples go on dates. Of course, this needs to be a competition, so the couples are competing for the most romantic date. Jessa says Michelle is always looking for a chance to relieve her kids of the stress of having young children. Only four couples could make the competition: Jessa & Ben, Kendra & Joe, Josiah & Lauren, and Abbie & John. These are the rules of the competition: (1) each couple only gets a $60 budget; (2) couples cannot go more than one hour away; (3) each date must be 4 hours long; (4) couples must take photos and videos for proof. The Forsyths say they didn’t play because they wanted to give the other couples a chance. Jeremy says for a romantic date, he would have a chef come to the house to cook for them. Jana says her date of choice would be a candlelit dinner and a walk. Tyler says he’d like steak, and Jackson says he’d go hunting.
Joe & Kendra are doing a penny-flipping date. As Joe drives their car, Kendra flips a penny. If it lands on heads, they’ll turn right, and if lands on tails, they’ll turn left. Wherever they end up on their 20th flip, they will have a picnic. They go down some dirt roads and hit some dead ends, but Kendra says it is all about where you end up together. They stumble upon a white gazebo after the last flip, and Kendra is thrilled.
Jessa & Ben go to a chocolate factory to learn how to make chocolate. They both agree that chocolate is the epitome of romance. They put on hairnets (and a beard-net for Ben) as they begin to make the shells for bon bons. Next, they add a coffee filling. The couples are then asked to choose bon bon flavors for each other. They tend to just pick their favorites.
Josiah & Lauren are going horseback riding at Fort Rock Family camp, and they will end with a bonfire in the woods. The Forsyth family has let them do this for free. Lauren says cheap dates are easy for newlyweds, as you just get to be together.
In Los Angeles, Jeremy is picking up Jinger and Felicity at the airport. Jeremy got there early for a conference, but he is excited they have all arrived to explore the city together. The Vuolos announce that they are moving to LA so Jeremy can pursue further theological training. They are excited to move, and Jinger says she has always wanted to move to a big city. Jessa says she is excited for them. The younger Duggars are all surprised, as they are country people. Ben says he wouldn’t mind living in a city, but Jessa makes a face at him. The traffic is bad compared to Arkansas and Laredo. Jinger says there will be some culture shock, but she is ready for it.
Back to the date competition, to no one’s surprise, John & Abbie are going flying. They are flying to a lake for a romantic steak dinner. Jeremy says there is no competing with John flying, and that he is a romantic guy now.
Back at the main house, Henry has awoken from a nap, and Jim Bob is in the yard playing with the kids and grandkids. Jim Bob & Michelle try to name the grandkids in birth order, and mix a few up, even forgetting Felicity for a few minutes. Meredith and Spurgeon bit each other at one point as they were playing. Michelle & Jim Bob remember how much they appreciated when Grandma Mary would take their kids and let them have a date night.
The couples talk about their favorite dates, and they agree they enjoy spending time together. Ben says he and Jessa try to do a date night at least once a week to make time for each other so they don’t become parenting coworkers. They top off their bon bons and take a video for the competition. Jim Bob & Michelle talk about how important times like these are for couples. Jessa & Ben finish their chocolates and get to try them, and they really enjoy them.
Josiah & Lauren are horseback riding. Lauren’s horse would not obey her, so they trade horses. That horse is not happy to be on the trail and is bucking, but eventually they get off the horses. John & Abbie are at the lake, and they grill steaks. Jessa & Ben stroll in a park and enjoy their chocolate. Joe & Kendra finish their picnic and then answer questions from Jim Bob & Michelle in the car.
Each couple records themselves as they answer questions from Jim Bob & Michelle. The first question is about finances. Ben says they aren’t as organized as they should be, and Jessa says she is more frugal than him for date nights, but she spends more on gifts. Abbie says they grew up dealing with finances differently: John was more investment focused, while Abbie worked. But Abbie has seen how his investments have worked out, so she trusts him.
[TW: Miscarriage].
At Fort Rock, Josiah & Lauren start a bonfire and start the questions. They are asked which vow has most been tested. Lauren says the vow about sickness and health, due to their miscarriage and how hard it was for both of them. Josiah says joy and sorrow, for similar reasons. Lauren says they have drawn closer together and are trying again.
[End TW: Miscarriage].
Jessa is asked about how she struggled to accept romantic gestures early on in the relationship, but now her affection comes naturally. Jessa says she is more into PDA now than Ben is. John says romantic gestures are important to keeping a healthy relationship. John says he and Abbie have a rule to never do “pecks”—they have to do “real kisses.” Joe & Kendra say they are romantic, but private. Jinger says Jeremy is super romantic, and he tries to surprise her, and she does the same. Having finished their dates, people begin heading back to the main house to pick up their kids. Joe & Kendra enjoyed their date, but they know they have more romantic siblings. John says it doesn’t matter whether they win, they are happy with the date. Josiah & Lauren and Ben & Jessa think they have good chances to win.
It is time for the awards from Jim Bob & Michelle. There are a few categories: most thrifty, most creative, date they’d like to copy, and most romantic, which is the overall grand prize. The couples share their photos and videos of the dates. Austin & Joy say John should win. Jim Bob says all the dates were great. Josiah & Lauren get most thrifty, as they spent nothing (“We spent the least, but had the most fun,” Josiah says). Jessa & Ben win the date Jim Bob & Michelle want to copy (Ben: “We’re first…in that category”). Most original goes to John & Abbie. (“The leftover category,” they complain). And Joe & Kendra get Most Romantic, as their stumbling on the gazebo and having a picnic was just a classic. They were surprised, realizing their date turned out better than they thought, but Kendra thinks everyone’s dates were very romantic. Josiah says you don’t have to spend money for romance, and Abbie says it’s about cherishing the time together. Kendra says it is good to pour as much into their marriage as possible. Jim Bob & Michelle offer to babysit for the couples when they go on marriage retreats.
*Episode 2: The Vuolos Take LA
The episode opens in LA. Jinger says they are moving to LA soon, but for now they are just visiting while Jeremy attends a conference. They are hiking to see the Hollywood sign. Jeremy is carrying the baby in a baby carrier, and he says it is his first time using it and he and Felicity are both enjoying it. In the talking heads, the producers ask the Seewalds if they take their kids hiking, and Ben says he once wore Spurgeon on his back in NYC and ended up exhausted and sunburnt. The producers and Jessa are dubious that NYC counts as hiking, but Ben insists urban hiking is a thing.
The Vuolos look down on the San Fernando valley, and then they hike down to the Hollywood Sign. In the talking heads, the producers ask Jinger about wearing pants. Jinger says she started incorporating pants because the Lord has led her there as of now. Jinger says she is grateful for her foundation in modesty. Michelle says she decided only to wear skirts and dresses based on her understanding of the Bible and prayer. Michelle says she used to mow her lawn in a bikini, and she was convicted by the Bible verse about not wearing that which pertains to a man. She then dressed her daughters modestly. Jinger says that she and Michelle talked about wearing pants before she started wearing them and Michelle told her to walk with the Lord and maintain modesty. Michelle says they all have different walks with the Lord and she enjoys their love and faith in God. Jinger & Jeremy enjoy the view of the city and getting close to the Hollywood sign. They joke that Felicity doesn’t know how cool this is, and they are excited for their big move.
At the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, Abbie & John are going on their honeymoon three months after their wedding. Abbie loves winter and cold weather. They are both enjoying being married, and didn’t want to be cooped up on a long plane after the wedding. John says they have learned that John is a night owl and Abbie is a natural morning person. John says she is teaching him about cooking and some nursing skills.
Jinger & Jeremy meet up with Gabby & Cade, two new friends who were American Idol contestants. Cade and Jeremy met up due to their shared values, and they became good friends. They are walking on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and talking about Cade’s influence. They take a picture with the star of Lionel Ritchie, one of the American Idol judges. Jeremy is excited to see the stars for NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, who are some of his childhood favorites. Jeremy recounts his twitter interaction with Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys. Jana, Jessa, Abbie, Kendra, and Joy don't know who either boy band is, but Austin says he knows who they are.
In Philadelphia, the single bros are out picking up limos that they are going to buy and flip. It is a 20-hour drive from Philly to Arkansas, so Jason, James, Justin, Jeremiah and Jedidiah have been recruited for the trip. The boys check the limos over, and it looks like they are all in good shape. They sign the paperwork to officially buy them. Jer says all the Duggar boys that aren’t in school work with their dad, mostly on property maintenance. Justin is glad they have this time to have fun and bond. The guys brought radios for the long trip. They talk about the condition of the cars and improvements they notice their cars need. Three hours into the trip, there is something odd in Jer’s limo, and his engine light comes on, so they pull over to check it out. The limo won’t start, and they figure out one of the injectors was dumping too much fuel into the engine. They manage to fix it, and then they head back on the road.
In Finland, John & Abbie are going to a reindeer farm. The Duggars cannot name Santa’s reindeer, but Lauren can. John, Abbie, and their guide go off in small, individual sleds pulled by reindeer. John’s reindeer is slow and stubborn. The guide then offers to let them race reindeer by letting reindeer pull them on skis. John says Abbie is very competitive and doesn’t like to lose. John goes first, and crosses the finish line in 14:11 seconds. Abbie is next, and she is nervous about skiing for the first time. But she gets off to a good start, and finishes in 16:25 second. The producers tell them that John won, and Abbie congratulates him. John says this was fun, and it did look like a total blast.
Back on the road trip with the guys, it is day two and the guys are 13 hours from home. They drive through Dunkin Donuts, and the cashiers at the drive thru make jokes with them about the limos. The guys head back out on the road, and drive through St. Louis. They are 6 hours from home, and they stop to rest in an RV park to spend the night. Joy says those five boys do everything together. Michelle says they were a lot of energy and a lot of fun growing up. The guys talk, and Jed says this might be the last time they are all together because they never know who will be in a relationship next. The twins are starting to think about courtship. Josiah says he wouldn’t be surprised if courtship came for one of them. Michelle explains courtship is focused on marriage. Jed asks what they look for in a girl and Jason says he wants a friend and companion who is humble and has a learning spirit. They ask Jessa what she wanted in her dream guy, and she says a beard. Jana jokes “tall, dark, and handsome” but corrects her answer to someone who has character and is established, mature, and wise. Jed says he wants someone who loves the Lord, is respectful to her parents, and is looking to be part of a team. Austin said he once went to a conference and was given a sheet of things to look for in a spouse: a good relationship with parents, self-acceptance, and isn’t too concerned with her outside appearance. He carried that sheet in his wallet until his wedding day. James says he is looking for a “modest, righteous babe.” The family guesses who will be next to court. Abbie says Jason, Joe says Jed or Jer, Jessa says not Jed, Joy says Jason, and Jed says Jana. Abbie said she did start courting later in life, and she was a little discouraged when her younger siblings started getting married. Jana says she feels some pressure, but she looks at this as a time to accomplish things. Jana has enjoyed the chance to do a lot of things. The guys also want to get good guys for their sisters. The producers ask Jana about her social media posts, and says she has gotten to know some people but it hasn’t led to marriage. John tells his brothers to enjoy the single years, and when the right one comes along, they will know.
The Vuolos and Gabby & Cade go to Venice Beach, and Felicity wakes up to see the beach for the first time. She has a big smile on her face. The sun was setting, and they enjoyed the view. Cade pulls out his guitar, and Gabby & Cade sing Amazing Grace to Felicity, who watches them intensely. They are excited to move and keep exploring.
Back on the road trip, the guys cross the Arkansas state line and arrive at the car lot. It was a long drive, but they enjoyed getting to bond.
In Finland, John & Abbie are visiting the White Cathedral, a famous Greek Orthodox church. In the talking heads, the Duggars all associate cold weather things with Finland, other than Ben, who associates it with a great pair of scissors made in Finland that his mom had when he was growing up. They arrive at the Cathedral, and they go up a lot of steps to see it up close. They look around the city, and look forward to the next part of their honeymoon in Lapland.
*Episode 3: Count Your Blessings
[TW: Miscarriage].
Lauren, her mother, and Michelle are having fruit and coffee and chatting. At first, they talk about organization. Then, Lauren explains she had a miscarriage, and both her mom and Michelle have also had miscarriages. Lauren says they have Josiah’s keepsakes from Michelle, several boxes of stuff, and that gave her the idea to make a box for Asa. Lauren says they already had names picked out before the miscarriage, and when they miscarried, Asa’s name meaning just fit; it means “living one” and “healer.” Josiah says they have been trying to spend time together. Michelle says her first miscarriage was Caleb, and then when she was expecting her 20th—really, 21, she corrects herself—and they were concerned after Josie’s birth. But halfway through the pregnancy, they discovered there was no heartbeat. Michelle says with her first miscarriage, shel felt like she couldn’t talk about it. Lauren says some people don’t talk about it and some people feel shame. Her mother says her miscarriage was after Lauren, and she thinks it was different to have a baby to hold while going through it. Michelle says no one can identify with someone else’s pain. Jessa says since she and Lauren had the same due date, Jessa has tried to be more aware of her emotions. Jessa says there can be a tendency to complain while pregnant, but Jessa has been more aware of the words she says. Jessa is impressed with her strength. Michelle tells Lauren that everyone grieves differently, but it is necessary to grieve. Lauren says she grieved for months, and her mother says she grieved for her. Lauren said she had depression and felt like life had no purpose. Lauren shows them her box for Asa, which includes the shirt she wore when she announced the pregnancy. Michelle reads their letter to Asa. Lauren says talking about her miscarriage is healing and it is something to keep talking about going forward. Lauren hopes to be thankful for where she is now and to encourage other people.
[End TW: Miscarriage].
In Finland, John & Abbie are heading to the Arctic Circle on an overnight train, which will take about 12 hours. They are looking forward to a new experience and board the train. They find the sleeper car and it is more snug than they were expecting. They close the door and start their journey.
Jinger is in Arkansas visiting her family, in particular to visit Grandma. Kendra is coming over to bring Garrett to see his cousin. Kendra says Garrett is seven months old, sitting up well, and recently cut his first teeth. Jinger says Felicity is five months old, wanting to roll over. Jessa says she is 19 weeks along, and they are going for an ultrasound tomorrow. Jessa is glad to be out of the first trimester. Kendra says it can be hard to keep Garrett entertained, but her family helps. Jinger says it is hard to be away from family. Jessa says she thinks she is having a boy, as the pregnancy is similar to Henry’s. Jessa says she has been having acne, and Jinger says she also broke out during her pregnancy with Felicity. Jinger says there are lots of old wives tales, and she doesn’t put too much into them. Jinger says it is nice to spend time together now that they are moms with little ones.
In Finland, John & Abbie are going to a glass blowing studio. This is their first time glass blowing. Abbie is making a glass bowl, and John is making a class vase. John says his parents once went on a glass blowing date. Abbie remarks that it is really hot, and John says that is because she is in the room. After their flirting, Abbie & John get to work on their projects. Joe & Kendra say they have sandals and t-shirts from their honeymoon. Jessa & Ben say they have a portrait done on the street in Paris. John & Abbie show their finished projects and say they will enjoy getting to use them “until our children break them” Abbie jokes.
Kendra is hosting Michelle, Jim Bob, Grandma Mary, Jinger, and Felicity. Jinger is trying to see her family as much as she can. Jim Bob says that Mary has had two strokes recently but is doing better. The family talks about their memories with Grandma Mary, such as spending time and doing puzzles together. Jim Bob says she was a role model to him. Michelle says “our life is like a vapor” and Mary agrees, and says it is more true the older you get. They take a picture with the four generations of Duggar women and Jinger says Felicity can show her kids one day.
In Finland, John & Abbie are staying at the arctic snow hotel, which is made of all snow and ice and has to be rebuilt annually. John says the hotel is around 30-32 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a big dining room in the hotel; it’s Duggar-sized, they joke and explain to the guide. They enjoy seeing the detail put into the hotel and then they are shown their room and the locker room (which is a back-up option for guests who want to be warmer). They cuddle up in their sleeping bags and hunker down for the night.
John & Abbie make it through the night, and then head out to go on snowmobiles. They are on their snowmobile trail when they see a rescue helicopter, and the guide says they will have to go look and see if they can help if there is an emergency. The victim appears to have crashed into a tree. They arrive at the scene and ask the first responders if there is anything they can do to help, but there are many first responders there who help the accident victim. They are cautious going forward, but enjoy their time snowmobiling. While it was a great honeymoon, it is time for them to head home.
It is time for Jessa’s ultrasound. They are finding out the sex but keeping it a secret from most of the family. Jana, Anna, and Jinger are coming along and they are not telling Spurgeon because he would tell everyone. Spurgeon says it’s going to be a boy. They listen to the heartbeat. Jessa & Ben are excited to see the baby, and Spurgeon is equally excited. The ultrasound tech shows Jessa & Ben the sex on the screen, and everyone is excited. Jana and Jinger refuse to tell the producers what the sex is. Jessa & Ben are excited for their new addition.
*Episode 4: Kendra’s Got A Secret
At her home, Kendra is cooking dinner and talking to Garrett. Kendra took a pregnancy test and discovered that she is pregnant. She is excited they are expecting. Kendra has kept it a secret to surprise Joe. She has an ice cream bowl, which she decorated with a message “baby coming soon” using edible glue to attach the sticker to the bottom of the bowl. Garrett is 8 months old, and Kendra says she has moments where she realizes she’s an adult because she often still feels young (girl, you are!). Kendra calls Joe and asks if the lot is busy. She asks if he can duck out early and Joe says he can leave once Josiah is back. Kendra asks him to get ice cream on the way home. She thinks he doesn’t suspect anything.
At Jessa & Ben’s house, Jessa & Ben are adding a backdoor and deck to make accessing the back yard easier for the boys. The single guys have shown up to work. Jessa says she is in the third trimester, which means she is in nesting mode. She says she hopes it will be done in two days. The boys have a disagreement about how to cut the siding. They note that Jason has recently completed two renovations. They get the siding cut off and put the door in. Jessa loves the door, and the next step is getting the deck in order. They leave the posts to set overnight.
Kendra is excited to have the opportunity to surprise Joe as she makes dinner. Joe arrives home with ice cream and pickles. Kendra says her heart is racing as they have dinner. Both of them dote on Garrett and they eat dinner and talk about work. Kendra is trying to stay calm (and totally succeeding in my opinion). Kendra gets the ice cream ready, and is so nervous she drops a scoop. She starts dying laughing and then serves it. They eat ice cream and Kendra is waiting for him to notice the sticker. She is so excited. Joe notices something in the bowl, and says it looks like a piece of grass. Joe asks where the bowl is from, and finally sees the sticker. He says “really?” and then they hug. Kendra says she is five weeks along, and Joe says he did not expect it at all. Joe says he should’ve seen she was nervous when she dropped the ice cream. Joe says he isn’t very emotional but he was very happy.
Jinger is going to a Stroller Stride Exercise Class—a group fitness class where kids in strollers are welcome. Jinger is looking forward to spending time with other moms and being able to exercise without finding a babysitter. As there are shots of Jinger’s work out class, the others talk about parenthood. Kendra says it is important as a mom to have some time to yourself. Kendra says she feels like she doesn’t spend as much time outdoors since she became a mom. Jessa says she has given up sleep. Jessa & Ben say they also make time for each other, but when the kids are around they are the focus. Jinger finished her workout and enjoyed the experience.
At Jessa & Ben’s, the guys continue building the deck. The guys will also be watching Spurgeon while Jessa & Ben take Henry to the doctor. Spurgeon is excited to help move boards and mark measurements. Spurgeon apparently frequently confuses his uncles. Jessa says Jed is his buddy. Jessa & Ben head off, and Spurge stays with the guys. The deck is coming together quickly.
At the doctor, Jessa & Ben get Henry out of the car. They are having him evaluated by an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor to check on his speech delays. Jessa says they noticed he was behind and wanted to make sure they were keeping an eye on things. They know every kid is different, but want to be sure. Jessa says she stresses as a mom and Ben is a little more level-headed. Jessa tells the doctor Henry had an extreme tongue tie at birth, which was clipped. Joe & Kendra say Garrett once had tightness in his neck, which a chiropractor treated. Back with Henry, the doctor says hearing loss doesn’t seem to be the issue, but it is time to focus on jumpstarting his development, and he is developmentally where he should be other than the speech issue. They will see a speech pathologist and go from there.
Back at the house, Spurgeon snuck away from his uncles and grabbed an ice cream sandwich. Jed tells him that he has to ask before eating ice cream and then makes him clean up the wrapper. Ben says they don’t let Spurgeon have sugar since he has a lot of natural energy. Jed discovers he ate two ice cream sandwiches. The guys resolve to keep him outside. They do this, and he informed them he needs a diaper change. None of the guys want to change it, and they call Jessa. She is five minutes away, so they wait. The guys agree that when they are married they will change diapers, but not now. Jessa says she wouldn’t expect the boys to change the diaper. While Jessa & Ben look at the deck, a bird poops on Ben. He goes to shower. Jessa says she would let the boys watch the kids again, and hopefully next time Spurgeon will be potty trained.
The deck is complete, and it is time for the party at Jessa & Ben’s. Jessa & Ben are having a gender guessing party. Jessa & Ben know the gender, and they won’t say it until the birth, but they want to have a fun guessing party. Jana, Anna, and Jinger know the gender as well. Jana says people are trying to get it out of her. Jinger says being far away helps. The family arrives, and Johannah says she thinks she overheard the gender but isn’t sure. Josiah & Lauren arrive, but Lauren says they won’t announce tonight.
The family enjoys pizza and time to catch up. Jessa says it is tight quarters in her house. Joe, Kendra, and Garrett arrive, and Kendra says she will announce tonight. Jana calls the party to order to play a game. They have a series of old wives tales, and they will see if the questions lead to correct gender guesses. They go through the list of old wives tales regarding the baby’s sex, but the family expresses doubt in the old wives tales. There are nine for the boy, and five for the girl. Jana has everyone pin their guesses on a board. Joe & Kendra guess girl, and so do Jenni and Johannah. Lauren & Josiah guess boy. Tyler and Jackson are stumped. Jim Bob says it's about time for a girl. Jessa says they won’t tell the gender today, but open the floor for any other announcements. Jessa said she had a hunch there would be another announcement. Then, Joe & Kendra announce that they are expecting again. Kendra says she hopes it was a surprise, and Ben jokes they should play again for Kendra. Jackson and Tyler say they know there will be another announcement soon, but they won’t tell. Jim Bob says it will be a busy year.
*Episode 5: The Great Duggar Campout
In LA, Jinger & Jeremy are apartment hunting with two property managers from their church. In order to keep costs down, they have a short wish list. Jinger wants two bedrooms, a private washer/dryer, and two parking spaces. Jeremy wants it to be close to church and in a safe neighborhood. The first apartment is in the NoHo arts district. The Duggars don’t know what NoHo means (which neither do I but I can guess). Michelle guesses “North Hollywood” and is correct. Jinger says raising kids in an apartment would be a challenge. The producer calls her on the slip of the tongue (for saying ‘kids’ instead of ‘kid’) and she insists it is not an announcement. The first apartment is called ‘Contemporary Living.’ The kitchen has granite counters, subway tile, new appliances, and an open floor plan. They see what would be Felicity’s bedroom and she crawls on the carpet. It is a 750 sqft apartment. Jim Bob & Michelle are asked about the smallest place they lived: a 900 sqft house until they reached five kids. Then, they had a 2200 sqft house until they reached 16 kids. Then, they moved to the main house (“The Big House”). The other Duggars couldn’t see themselves living in a 700 sqft apartment at this point. Jinger & Jeremy want to keep looking.
In Arkansas, it is Monday, which is Duggar Family Fun Night. This is a tradition that Jana and Joy started to have more family bonding time. This one is extra special as they will be camping. The family loads up to head out. Josiah & Lauren have a special announcement for the camping trip. The family caravan is off to the campsite. The boys are dropped off first because they are going to do a scavenger hunt while the girls set up camp. The boys get a piece of a map, and Jana collects their phones so they cannot cheat.
The girls are trying to set up camp and cook dinner. Jordyn is in charge of the “little buddies,” Michelle says. Kendra and Abbie get to work setting up a tent. The tent is a little bit of a puzzle, but they set it up quickly and get to work. The set up is going well.
The boys are looking for their next piece of the map. Jackson and Tyler get it out of a little cave. Ben says Josiah and John will be the best at the scavenger hunt; Josiah says Joe will be the best. Jed finds the next clue. They keep heading to the next clue, looking for the red envelope. They are struggling to find it when they spot it up in a tree. Josiah starts climbing a tree, and Jim Bob recalls when he broke his arm climbing as a kid. Josiah gets the clue and the final piece of the map, and they head to the campsite.
Back in LA, Jinger & Jeremy are looking at the “Vintage Hollywood,” property, which has two beds and one bath with only one parking spot but a lot of character and charm. There is a hidden closet behind the bookcase. The Vuolos love the charm of the property. The property manager said there is a rumor that Charlie Chaplin lived there. Jinger in particular seems much more excited about this one. They are still going to look at more tomorrow.
At the campsite, the girls are cooking dinner and waiting for the guys to get back; as they wait, they start to worry about them. The boys are attempting to cross a river—they were given two boards to help them cross, and the planks weren’t wide enough to get across. Making a bridge of logs and boards is a fail, so they start trying to walk across. It is fast moving, and Jim Bob tries to cross it quickly and falls into the water. Jim Bob says the good news about no phones is his phone didn’t get wet. The Duggars all wade across, and most of them stay pretty dry.
At the campsite, the boys arrive and Lauren is excited to see Josiah but worried that he was the dirtiest one of all. Joe leads the family in prayer before dinner, and then everyone digs in. Michelle says this reminds her of the old days of having them all at home. They talk about their journey across the river and they laugh and Josiah jokes that he should win a prize for getting across the river first. Jim Bob jokes that he gets a free hamburger and hotdog. Josiah then announced that they are expecting. Everyone cheers and Michelle rushes over to hug Lauren. Lauren says she is 9 weeks along, they had been trying for quite a while and were shocked when they found out. They are a little nervous but also grateful. Lauren says her due date is a week and a half after Kendra. Kendra is so glad they are expecting together. Michelle says the pregnant moms and babies get the camper. Jim Bob jokingly has Tyler and Jackson dig a latrine for everyone.
Back in LA, Jinger & Jeremy are looking at more properties. The property managers take them to the ‘Ministry House,’ which is a single family house on Sunset Blvd. The property is used by the church and they will have a short term lease while they look for a more permanent place. They are in awe of how big and beautiful the house is. They want to think it over and get back to the property owners.
The Vuolos go to the coffee shop to discuss their options. Jeremy pulls up pictures of all three properties. They talk over what they like: the first place, Contemporary Living,’ has gated parking and an open plan, but it’s very small; the second place, ‘Vintage Hollywood,’ is so cool and stylish, but there is one parking space and it is farther from church. Then they have the ‘Ministry House,’ which is only temporary but beautiful. Jinger is a little torn between the options, but says she would drop the first one. Parking is a big issue with Vintage Hollywood. Finally they make their decision. They call the property managers and say they want to start out in the ‘Ministry House.’ They are excited to have a place to stay for now.
The next morning, the campers are all making breakfast. Ben tells Spurgeon they are making eggs and bacon on the fire. “And marshmallows,” Spurgeon suggests. Ben says he slept okay; Lauren says Henry cried a little during the night, but she woke up with morning sickness anyway. After breakfast, the family plays team building games. The first game is called ‘A-Frame Game.’ One team member stood in the A frame (which is an A shape made of wood) while the rest of the team uses ropes to support them and move them towards the finish line. Team 1 does it in 49 seconds. Team 2 does it in 36 seconds. The next game is the ski challenge game. The teams are on one set of skis and must work together to move the ski forward. Josiah’s team wins, as Ben falls near the finish line. The conclusion of the games ends the camping trip, and they thank Jana for planning it. Jessa says it is harder to get together for things like this, and it is always a blast when they do.
*Episode 6: Baby Number Two...But Who?
- Death. The final episode of this season [Episode 10: Grandma Duggar Remembered] discusses the June 9, 2019 passing of Mary Leona Lester Duggar, the mother of Jim Bob, and depicts her memorial services.
- Miscarriage. Lauren Swanson Duggar had a miscarriage in October 2018 and this season discusses her and her family's grief. Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth announces her second pregnancy in this season. She ultimately lost her daughter, Annabell Elise, in July 2019. This season concludes before her loss.
In Laredo, Jeremy and Felicity are working on an art project in the backyard. It will be a gift for Jinger. He is excited to just let Felicity go for it as he sets out paint and rollers. Jeremy is worried about the mess, but he has a blast letting her crawl around on the paint on the canvas. He jokes that he is gonna get in trouble from Jinger for this. The artwork is complete, and both Jeremy and Felicity are covered in paint. In a talking head, Jeremy gives the canvas to Jinger. She loves it. The Duggars all guess styles of art it might be—Jessa nails it: finger painting.
At Jessa & Ben's, the pair are preparing for a speech pathologist to come over and evaluate Henry's speech. Since they found out his hearing was ok, they are looking for solutions to the speech issue. Jessa says sometimes it is important to get extra help, and Michelle says they learned that with Josie in particular. Jessa says Mason is saying more words than Henry, which makes her realize he needs help. The speech pathologist has him identify pictures, and he gets the first two right. Jessa says since Henry has a limited vocabulary, he resorts to screaming when he needs something. This is stressful and draining for his parents. The speech pathologist says he is 6 months delayed and in the 60th percentile for speech at his age. Jessa says that, as a parent, it is hard to see his struggles. The speech pathologist tells them to give it 6-8 weeks to see if he picks up more words and if not, they should start speech therapy.
Jinger & Jeremy have Joe & Kendra visiting to help them prepare to move. Jinger and Kendra start in the kitchen. First they are labelling items to sell, keep or donate. Joe and Jeremy are doing the same in the garage. Michelle says she likes to let things go, whereas Jim Bob likes to keep things. Joe says he is the keeper, and Josiah says Lauren is a minimalist. Ben says he is more sentimental, but Jessa says neither of them are packrats. While they pack, the babies play. Jinger says it is crazy to see her kid and Joe's kid playing together. Jinger and Joe were close growing up, the family recounts. Joe and Jeremy move to doing repairs in the house. Joe laughs when asked who is more handy. Back in the kitchen, Kendra and Jinger talk about her pregnancy. Kendra says she is less sick this time. Kendra asks Jinger if they are thinking of having baby #2. Jinger says in their family it is very normal to be asked. Jinger says it is time to treat Joe & Kendra to a nice restaurant.
At the main house, the kids are doing their jurisdictions. The kids have been stepping up more, since more of the older kids have moved out of the house. One of the cows had a calf, and the mother cow passed away, so the kids are raising the calf. Johannah and Jenni feed the calf two times a day. Jenni says she wants more ducks and chickens on the farm. The family has a few cows, ducks, chickens, a rabbit, cats, and dogs. The family heads out to collect eggs and feed the calf. Anna is over with her kids to combine the homeschooling effort. The calf is named Paco right now, but it is a girl cow—at first they thought it was a boy. Michelle says they should change the calf's ear tag to be a daisy, and make it out of leather, signifying her name as Daisy. Anna jokes that a leather tag might offend the cow. Jana says the kids are doing good taking care of the calf. Jessa says that Anna recently announced that she is expecting baby #6, so she might not be keeping up with the little cow for much longer.
In Laredo, the Vuolos take Joe & Kendra out for dinner. Garrett and Felicity are there as well. Joe says fine dining was not common growing up. Kendra doesn't know what a red snapper is—she says she also never went to fancy restaurants growing up. Two appetizers are dropped off for them from the chef, who is a friend of the Vuolos. Jeremy says he was surprising them with some unusual appetizer: frog legs and something in the taco he'll tell them about later. Kendra looks nervous. After Joe tried the frog leg and likes it, Kendra tries them and likes them, but she only eats one. Next up are the tacos. Jeremy and Jinger try the tacos, and Jinger tells Kendra she is pregnant and doesn't have to try if she doesn't want to. Joe tries them and likes them, and Kendra ends up taking a bite. Kendra says it isn't bad, crunchy with some spice. Kendra says the texture freaked her out, and the chef comes over to tell them they just tried grasshoppers. Kendra is worried this will set her stomach off. Joe & Kendra say they probably won't try it again, but Jinger & Jeremy finish their tacos. In talking heads, the Duggars are offered grasshopper tacos; John & Abbie try them as well as Jed and Tyler. John finishes his.
Next, the Vuolos take Joe & Kendra to St. Augustine Square. There is a mariachi band playing in the park. They are delighted with the band. Growing up, music was melodious, conservative, and involved no dancing. The idea was to have calmer music for calmer kids; harp music in particular was calming. Jana says people's views can change. Josiah says he loves bluegrass, Jinger likes classical, and Jessa says twinkle twinkle little star is her thing these days. Jeremy says it will be hard to say goodbye to Laredo. Joe says that was a great way to finish their trip, and he hopes they will be able to visit the Vuolos more often.
Back at the main house, it is Monday Night Family Fun Night. Tonight they are doing a painting class, and Joy is planning on announcing her pregnancy during it. Joy says her due date is November 9. The family is sitting at a bunch of tables in the living room, watching the painting class on a projector. As the family continues painting, they are enjoying the activity. In the middle of the class, the video cuts to another frame, and the Forsyth announcement pictures pop up. Everyone is still painting, and doesn't notice at first. Some people catch it quickly, but it takes others a minute to figure it out. Finally, Michelle reads it out loud and Joy gives her parents a hug. Jessa says time is flying. Joy says she is due three days after Kendra, meaning Kendra was due Nov. 6. Everyone is delighted, especially Kendra since they have been doing things together. John says it is becoming a weekend tradition that someone announces a pregnancy. There are five babies due in 2019 right now. Joy says she was delighted they were expecting but nervous about going from one to two.
*Episode 7: Marriage Bootcamp
The married couples have arrived at the bootcamp that Jim Bob & Michelle set up after the date night conference. The retreat is at a lake house, and Pastor Caldwell is leading the retreat. Lauren Caldwell and Lily Swanson are going on the retreat to watch Garrett and Gideon. Both girls think it will be no trouble and "fun." The Seewalds have left their kids with their grandparents. Josiah & Lauren joke they have only been married for 10 months and feel like babies at the retreat. Joy says she needs a lot of work, and Austin jokes that he hopes she gets a lot of work done. Austin then says he wants to get their marriage off autopilot and start investing in it. Pastor Caldwell says they are focusing on communication, compromise, and commitment. Pastor Caldwell says that they have to keep God first, but their spouse is their top earthly priority. Communication is important. Michelle says some need to be more drawn out—the camera shows John; and some need to talk less—the camera shows Josiah. Joy says she tends to be hurtful and then clam up when they have conflict. Joy says she needs to communicate more. Plan times to just communicate, Pastor Caldwell says. John says they talk every evening before bed and it has been helpful for Abbie who tends to keep stuff in. Pastor Caldwell says women tend to be more detail-oriented than men, and Joe says he doesn't give much detail. Kendra says she likes to communicate a lot, and will bring things up and then Joe will open up. Ben says he is more detail-focused, and Jessa says she has to work on keeping her mouth closed. She says she will just talk, and try to finish his sentences instead of listening. Lauren says Josiah talks a lot and very quickly, so she has to interrupt him. After they finish talking, Pastor Caldwell tells the guys to go change if they don't want their clothes wet.
The couples head out to the lake, and Pastor Caldwell has blindfolds, radios, and boats for each couple. The guys will be in the boats blindfolded, and the wives have to guide their husbands in an obstacle course to grab a duck in the middle of a pond and bring it back to shore. The couples are all competitive, and it quickly becomes a race. The guys have some trouble figuring out their paddles and figuring out where they are going. Lauren knows Josiah learns by repetition, which she uses to her advantage and they win. Josiah thinks he has someone on his tail, but he wins by a few minutes. The other four are struggling to grab a duck. Austin says he is constantly overcorrecting. Jessa struggles with right and left and keeps giving Ben wrong directions. Jessa starts dying laughing, which doesn't help Ben get a duck. Austin ditches his paddles and uses his arms to propel himself. This works out better and Austin is second. Joe is bummed he didn't win, but is trying to finish. John David is third, and Joe fourth right on his tail. Ben finally gets a duck and rows back. Josiah & Lauren are very proud of themselves. They had fun, and head back inside to dry off and get warm.
Jinger & Jeremy are holding a garage sale before they move. Jinger says she will empty the house. Jinger is not at all sentimental about her stuff; Jeremy used to be, but he is looking forward to getting rid of a lot. Jinger prices up for negotiation purposes. Jinger says they are getting rid of a lot, so they might make a fair amount.
Back at the marriage retreat, the next challenge is about compromise. Jim Bob & Michelle talk about how it can be hard but is necessary. Pastor Caldwell asks John & Abbie, the most recently married, if they have had to compromise. Abbie says they’ve had to compromise their schedules—John is very flexible but she has always lived by a strict schedule. Ben says he likes to cook nice meals, and Jessa is more used to eating on the go, so if he wants a nice sit down meal, he does it himself. Joe says you are not always gonna see eye to eye on everything, and not compromising causes tension. Josiah says he is very opinionated, and Lauren will say they're both right, but they can't both be right. Pastor Caldwell says that if you win the fight but lose the relationship, you lose overall. Then he introduces the challenge: the couples must build a nest that will hold three marbles so they won't fall through. The couples get to work on their nest. Josiah & Lauren are trying to figure out the project but have some difficulties. Joy uses a technique she learned in survival camp and the Forsyths work together well to make their nest. Austin says he knows if he listens to her, it will work out. Their nest is finished quickly. Ben & Jessa start doing their own thing. Lauren isn't feeling well, and goes to lay down and while Josiah finishes the nest. Lauren says Josiah learns best if you let him fail on his own and don't nag him. Lauren says they are still working on it. John & Abbie work well together, and so do Joe & Kendra. Everyone finishes their nest.
On the morning of the garage sale, the Vuolos open their garage and find a bunch of bargain hunters ready to start shopping. The Vuolos struggle with their Spanish speaking customers, so their bilingual friend comes to translate for them. She is a lifesaver. Jeremy says he is the worst negotiator. The Duggars agree that Jim Bob is the best negotiator, although a few say it is Jed. Jinger gives Jeremy a hard time for selling things too cheaply. Jeremy says he has not attended Jim Bob's school of negotiation. In total, they made $379 and they are happy with that.
Back at the retreat, it is the next day and they are having breakfast. The final step of the retreat is commitment. Everyone is there but Lauren, who was kept up last night from the kids and is tired and nauseous and stayed in bed to recover. Pastor Caldwell says marriage is all about commitment; it is not about feelings, but actions and choices. Pastor Caldwell says there is nothing more effective for the marriage than staying committed. Pastor Caldwell then has each couple rewrite their wedding vows for a renewal. Jim Bob & Michelle remember their vow renewal. The room has been decorated, and there are veils and flowers for the wives. Ben kisses Jessa, and she jokes that he hasn't married her yet. Ben & Jessa go first, and they are sweet and talk about what is important to them and trying to do better in their marriage. They kiss, and then it is Joy & Austin's turn. Joy & Austin love the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment, and Joy loves to hear him talk about his goals for their marriage. They kiss. John & Abbie are giddy and nervous, and Abbie says he takes her breath away. They are like, crazy adorable, and they kiss. Joe & Kendra go next. Kendra says it is more emotional this time, and it was sweet to hear from him. Joe says he didn't bawl like the first time. They film poor Josiah doing his vows into his phone camera, which Lauren really appreciated. Pastor Caldwell says everyone is on a great track, and the couples are grateful they had the chance to learn and grow together.
*Episode 8: Five Pregnancies and Counting
Five Duggar ladies are pregnant, and Jana is hosting a garden party for them all before Jessa gives birth. Jessa, Kendra, Lauren, Anna, and Joy are pregnant together; everyone but Jessa (who is due in June) is due in November. It is raining, and they are hoping the rain will clear before the party starts. The sun comes out and it is time for the party. Kendra, Lauren Caldwell, and Christina Caldwell arrive. Jana has set up food inside to start. Laura DeMasie jokes to Jessa that they should have served spicy food to kickstart her labor. Jessa says it would be bad timing now because they have a wedding (Carlvan's, presumably) to attend. Jessa says she has felt the best this pregnancy as she has been eating clean and taking her vitamins consistently. Anna says she is the last due, and about 13 weeks at the party.
The sun has come out, so the ladies move to Jana's garden to arrange flowers. Kendra says she has bad morning sickness and has been super emotional throughout her pregnancy. Lauren says she was very sick in the first trimester but it is starting to wear off. Luckily, the Duggars confirm due dates for us: Joy is due November 6th, Kendra is due November 9th, Lauren is due November 17th. This means three babies will be due within eight days of each other. Michelle says it is hard to keep track of who is pregnant. Michelle suggests that they should take a pregnant ladies photo, and Jessa suggests they do a professional shoot. Jana says the party was a success, even with the rain, and they will do another one soon.
At the Seewalds, Jessa & Ben are preparing for a family trip to Eureka Springs, where Ben proposed. It has been five years since the proposal, so they are going back to reminisce on their proposal. Ben says the new baby will change the family dynamic. Jessa says the proposal was a huge surprise. The first stop is Basin Spring park, where Jessa had to collect 12 roses from 12 strangers, which was awkward for her. Ben says he should've had her sing karaoke. In the talking heads, Jessa says she had no cravings during her pregnancies, but she did have aversions to coffee and chicken. Lauren says the same thing, just aversions, and Joy says no meat, and Kendra says no sweets. The Seewalds stop for a treat at a pastry shop near the park. The next stop is the train. The boys are very excited to ride the train. Jessa says a new sibling will be a big adjustment for Henry. Spurgeon gets it more than Henry, Jessa says. The train ride concludes, and then the family heads to the chapel where they got engaged.
Jessa & Ben share their memories of their proposal day (with Jinger chaperoning) and talk about how special it is to be back there with two kids now. Jessa says it is crazy to be back and see how much time has flown. Ben gets down on one knee again and asks "stay married to me?" and Jessa says, "always." They talk about how special this trip was, and how much they love each other and how blessed they are to be married to each other.
[TW: Miscarriage].
Lauren & Josiah are going to get an ultrasound done, which is emotional after the loss of their first pregnancy. Lauren says she is always scared that something is not right—she has had some spotting and progesterone level issues at the beginning of this pregnancy—and they were worried they would lose this one. Lauren says Josiah has been her rock through this pregnancy. The ultrasound begins, and the doctor shows them the head and torso. They hear the heartbeat, and both Josiah & Lauren beam. Everything looks good, which Josiah & Lauren are very glad to hear. They get ultrasound pictures and a blood test to get a gender reveal.
[End TW: Miscarriage].
At Joe & Kendra's, Kendra and Jessa are taking their sons to the park. Garrett is 11 months old, nearly walking and extremely cute. Kendra says this pregnancy is harder since she can't rest as much with Garrett. Kendra says she wants advice from Jessa about handling two little ones. Jessa says it is almost like having twins to have two kids that close together. Jessa says it is hard to convince the older sibling to be gentle with the baby. Jessa points out that the park was not enclosed—the entrance was open so the boys could technically escape. Kendra goes to grab something from the car, so Jessa holds Garrett as she watches the boys. Henry immediately starts eating chips he found on the ground. The boys start getting fussy, so it is time to head home for nap time, but they enjoyed the outing.
The pregnant ladies are having a maternity clothes swap to switch up their wardrobes. They have fun trying on clothes and swapping stuff that doesn't fit. They talk about ruching, and how that is helpful for maternity clothes. None of the boys know what ruching is. Jana adds elastic to some tops to add that ruching effect. Michelle says it is surreal to watch her kids have kids. Jessa says she doesn't think the baby will come early, because she's gone five days late for both of her pregnancies and she thinks she will again. Jessa says she loves the newborn phase and is excited to see the boys meet the baby. The photoshoot is discussed, and everyone talks about the style they will go for. Lauren says times like this are very special.
At the Swanson home, Josiah & Lauren are having a gender reveal party. Lily, Lauren's sister, is setting up tables on the lawn. Josiah thinks it is a girl, Lauren says she thinks it’s a boy. The other Duggars put their guesses out there, and the family starts arriving for the party. Lily has lots of balloons—most of them have white confetti, but one has either pink or blue confetti. Josiah and Lauren start popping balloons, and they get a lot of white ones. One of the kids releases a balloon, and suddenly they worry that that balloon is the reveal balloon. As they keep going, everyone thinks the escaped balloon was the one. Kendra said this seemed like a set up. All the balloons are popped, and still no reveal. Lil says she left one inside, she'll go find it. Ben is glad to see Josiah on the other end of a prank. Lily comes out with a huge balloon, and everyone laughs. Josiah pops the balloon, and the confetti is pink. Josiah kisses Lauren, and everyone cheers. Lauren's mom is excited to go shopping for the baby. Lauren jokes they won't get to use their boy name. Josiah explains they are doing an alphabetical theme, starting with Asa and Baby #2 will be named Bella Milagro, which means beautiful miracle. Michelle says it is a joy to get to be excited for them about this baby girl coming.
On May 26, Jessa's water broke while she was making breakfast, and the baby is officially on the way. Jessa says most of her family is at a wedding in Tennessee and her midwife is also out of town. Jill is in town and has come over to help Jessa. She gives Jessa castor oil. Michelle and Jana are flying back for the birth. Everyone is surprised Jessa has gone into labor early. Jessa's contractions have picked up, and the baby is officially on the way.
*Episode 9: A Surprise Delivery
Jill and Jessa head to the big house to climb the stairs in hopes that will get her contractions going. Jessa climbs the stairs and says she is so out of shape and this is hard. This works, and the contractions pick up so they go back to Jessa & Ben's house. Jill is there helping Jessa with labor while John David watches the boys.
Jana says they are at a wedding out of town in Tennessee and they are heading back to Arkansas. Josiah & Lauren are going to fly Jana & Michelle back for the birth. Jana says Jessa has had complications in the past so they are all praying for a healthy mom and baby. Josiah takes off and notes he brought the slower plane, which means they might miss the birth.
At the house, Jessa is six hours into labor and Jill says contractions have really picked up. The midwife and her assistant have arrived at the house. Jessa had planned on a midwife-assisted hospital birth, but her midwife was out of town so they decided to do a homebirth with their backup midwife. Teresa, the midwife of dubious reputation, says everything is going well.
The plane has landed in a small town in the middle of nowhere for Michelle, who was having motion sickness. It was 95 degrees out and there wasn’t air conditioning in the plane, so it was a rough ride. They get back in the plane and keep heading back to Arkansas.
Nine hours in, Jessa's labor has progressed and she feels like she needs to start pushing. Jill says they are doing great. Jessa is playing music during this labor and she says it is really calming for her. Jessa says she feels her body starting to push, and then she gives birth. Jill announces that it is a girl, and Jessa is overwhelmed with emotion as she meets her daughter. Ben says he didn't have a lot of words for that moment. Ben takes the baby, and Jessa is bleeding a little too much. The midwives watch her for a minute and then they decide to head to the hospital. Paramedics arrive and help bring Jessa to the hospital. Ben, Jill, the midwife, and the baby will meet Jessa at the hospital.
At the hospital, Jessa gets pitocin to help her uterus clamp down; eventually, the bleeding stops. Spurgeon and Henry arrive to meet the baby. Spurgeon gets to hold the baby, and Jessa says it is a shock to have a girl for the first time. Jana, Michelle, Lauren, and Josiah arrive to meet the baby. Ben announces that the baby will be named Ivy Jane. Lauren holds Ivy, and cries quietly. She says it was healing to hold Ivy, but she felt a lot of emotions. Jessa spends the night at the hospital but then goes home to have a party for her family to meet Ivy. Spurgeon says if you take Ivy’s headband off, she'll be a boy, which is great. The family arrives, and Grandma Mary is excited to meet her birthday buddy. Everyone gets to hold the baby and Jessa talks about how sweet they were together. Kendra's gender reveal is next, and Michelle says there are now four pregnancies in November. Jessa says it could be a year of girls. Kendra says Ivy is the start of the baby wave; Joe says a tsunami is coming. The Seewalds say they are enjoying their new season of life.
Jana goes to visit John & Abbie after their recent mission trip to the Philippines. Jana brings flowers and tells them about the garden party. Abbie says she has a special connection to Jana because John is her twin and twins have a special connection. John says the trip was good, but Abbie says she isn't feeling very well. Abbie tells Jana she got her a birthday present: a baby due around her birthday. Abbie is eight weeks pregnant and feeling awful, lying around and resting. Abbie has gotten fluids at the ER for her morning sickness. John says it is hard watching her in pain. Abbie says they know the baby is okay and she says she is reminding herself that she is sick for a good reason. Jana suggests that Abbie announce to the girls at the photoshoot. John said it is surreal that he is going to be a dad. Abbie says she is gonna try to make it to the photoshoot.
Kendra, Joe, her sister Lauren (hereinafter “LC”), her mom, and little brother Isaiah are heading in for an ultrasound to reveal the gender. Kendra says she wants to be surprised again, and LC gets an envelope so she can put the surprise together. The doctor finds the sex and gives it to LC, who says it is hard to keep it a secret until the reveal. The doctor says everything looks good, and Kendra just needs to grow a bigger baby.
Jinger is going to the hair salon and planning to get a blonde balayage done to her hair. She is nervous as she sits in the chair. Jinger says she has been growing her hair for years. Jana says growing up they had similar hairstyles, and then they started experiments. They recall Jana's mishap with hair dye, and they recall the perms. Jinger is also getting a good amount cut off. Michelle says they've always had long hair because of the scriptures. Jinger gets four inches cut off her hair, and then the stylist begins dying it. Jeremy is excited for her new look. Jinger says it is a change to be in LA and that Felicity will be a Cali girl. Jeremy is packing and watching Felicity while Jinger is getting her hair done. Jeremy gets a lot done while Felicity watches him and laughs. "Honestly, if you helped, this would be a lot easier," he teases. Back at the salon, Jinger is wrapping up. The stylist blows her hair and curls it for the finished look. Jinger is thrilled, but it is weird to see herself as a blonde for the first time. Jana also went darker, joking that she and Jinger have swapped hair colors.
Back home, Jeremy and Felicity are waiting to see Jinger’s new look. He says she looks beautiful and he loves it. Felicity isn't too phased by the change. Jeremy takes her outside to take a few pictures, and they agree that it is the perfect color for California.
It is time for Kendra's gender reveal. Jessa, Ben, and Ivy are in attendance. LC, James, and Jenni made the smash cake that will reveal the gender. They are the only ones who know the gender so far. It is a fun birthday party. Jim Bob has the family take a picture of the birthday group, which is actually nice. Then they give Garrett the cake, blowing out his candle before he touches the flame. Garrett is a little timid to take a bite of the cake at first, and a little confused at everyone watching him. He doesn't like his hands being messy. Kendra pushes his hand into the cake a little, and when he pulls it away they see the pink icing. They are both so surprised, and Garrett looks deeply confused by his parents. They are excited for their sweet baby girl. Jessa says this is the season for baby girls.
*Episode 10: Grandma Duggar Remembered
It is the morning of the maternity sister shoot. Jana jokes that she is not pregnant, just there to help out. Abbie says she is planning on surprising the sisters at the shoot. Lori Blythe is the photographer, and she did John & Abbie's engagement and wedding. Jana says the theme is bohemian, natural, and organic. Ivy arrived early, but both Jessa and Ivy will be in the shoot. Grandma Mary holds Ivy while the girls get ready. Joy says she loves getting ready with her sisters, just like they did growing up. The sisters arrive at the outdoor location, and Joy talks about how she will find out her baby's gender in a few weeks. Abbie is not feeling great, but Jana wants the reveal to go off. Joy and Jessa take a photo together first, and then the in-laws, Anna, Kendra, and Lauren, join in. Then, they start taking big group shots in a few different poses. Jana sneaks out to go get Abbie. To get the girls giggling and smiling, they makeup creative baby names based on the alphabet. A car pulls up, and all the girls debate who is in the car. Joy thinks it is Jinger. Lauren doesn't think it is Jinger. Abbie gets out, and everyone cheers when they realise what it means. Abbie is still not feeling 100% but everyone is so happy for her. Abbie is excited to hear it. They add her into the group shot, and Jana thinks the shoot went well. Abbie says she was at urgent care for a UTI when she found out she was pregnant. Michelle says six babies in one year is a good start, but she wouldn't be surprised if this is just the beginning.
In Laredo, it is moving day for the Vuolos. Jinger is still getting used to being blonde. The drive is 20 hours, and so they will break it up into a few days since they have Felicity. A moving crew arrives and packs the truck. The truck is leaving first thing in the morning, and the Vuolos will follow after their last service in Laredo on Sunday. Jinger & Jeremy talk about how special their first house is—it’s where they had the gender reveal brought Felicity home for the first time. Jeremy says they saw themselves raising a family and spending years there. While they are excited to go to Los Angeles, it is sad to say goodbye to this house and Laredo.
[TW: Death].
Grandma Mary Duggar passed away on June 9, 2019 and the rest of this episode covers the funeral and the family's grief.
Jinger & Jeremy are not heading to LA, but are going back to Arkansas as Grandma has passed away. That morning, Grandma Mary had breakfast and church with her grandchildren, and then sat outside when she got home. It is likely she had another stroke and fell into her pool. Jinger & Jeremy get in the car to head to Arkansas for the funeral. Michelle says she told Jed, and they both hugged each other. Jed then got the older ones together to share what had happened. Jana says it was a shock, as she had just been with Grandma Mary that morning. Jessa says losing someone is not something that hits you all at once, but settles in over time. Jim Bob says their family is doing well, as they believe when a Christian dies they go to Heaven and they will see her again. Jinger is struggling and says they will miss her a lot.
In Arkansas, Jinger and Michelle are bringing a dress and necklace for Grandma and making arrangements for the service. Both Jinger and Michelle cry as they talk with the funeral director to make plans for the ceremony. Michelle shows a verse that means a lot to her: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him." She plans on sharing it at the service. Michelle says that she was very close to Mary and that Mary was always there for her. Michelle says she misses her so much, as she was a big part of their lives everyday.
The family has a private viewing, and many of Grandma Mary's grandchildren are in tears. Jim Bob says her previous strokes had prepared them to make every day with her count. Joy talks and shares her memories of spending time with Grandma Mary. Joy says Grandma Mary always warned them about storms, especially when they moved into their camper. Jackson says he doesn't remember his grandfather passing, so this is his first time dealing with something like this. Jackson says his birthday was in May, and he puts his card (from Grandma Mary) by the side of his bed and one night he put his hand over and felt it there, and was able to read it and remember. He was very emotional and had trouble getting through the story, which is sweet. Joe goes to speak, but ends up just crying and hugging his brother; Kendra comes up and holds him. Michelle goes to talk in the mic while Joe & Kendra compose themselves. Joe goes back up to the mic and says they have the log cabin house (which was originally Grandma Mary’s house), and how that house reminds him of Grandma Mary and how she encouraged him. Jim Bob & Michelle say it was a precious time for their family.
The family gathers for the Celebration of Life and Burial of Grandma Mary. The family gathers and Pastor Caldwell leads them in prayer. Jim Bob & Michelle open the ceremony by sharing a few words about how they will miss her. In the talking heads, Jana recounts how much time Grandma Mary spent getting to know each one of her grandkids and great-grandkids. In the talking heads, Joe recalls having Grandma Mary at Garrett's first birthday shortly before she passed. Jessa speaks next at the Celebration of Life, recounting how she was grandma to all and also remembering her love for shopping and discounts. Jim Bob says he and Michelle will be more intentional about spending time with their grandkids in her honor. The grandkids then say goodbye while the show plays Amazing Grace. They head to the burial, which Jeremy presides over. Jim Bob says she made a difference in all their lives, which will have an impact on generations to come.
The next day, Michelle is spending time with Felicity before the Vuolos head to LA. Jim Bob talks about how Felicity reminds him of little Jinger. In the talking heads, Jer and Jed say that Grandma Mary would want them to move on and carry on the torch she left before them. Jessa says hard times and good times are intertwined. Jessa talks about how their family has had good times, hard times, pregnancy announcements, the marriage retreat, and the birth of Ivy Jane. Abbie & John recall their honeymoon and their pregnancy announcement at the photoshoot. Josiah recalls the date night competition, and Lauren notes that there must've been a record number of gender reveals—especially a lot of pink. Jeremy says they are excited to go to LA and get connected to the church and community. Kendra says she remembers Garrett's birthday and their little girl on the way. Jana says there have been lots of good memories this year. Michelle says she has lots of grandbabies coming and maybe some new relationships too—they have a lot to look forward to, and it is gonna be a busy year. Joy says Gideon keeps her busy, and hopefully they'll find a house soon, but if not the camper will still do. Jana says life gets busier and she is looking forward to whatever is on the horizon next. Jinger & Jeremy drive off, and Jeremy asks Felicity if she is ready. He says she is.
[End TW: Death].
