*Episode 1: A Family Divided
The episode opens with Micah's Instagram posts, talking about his new house, car, and how he's been working on his body. He says he has a big social media following. Micah and Moriah are renting a house together after their parents encouraged them to move out. Micah and Moriah show us around their new place: it looks like a classic college roommate situation. Moriah says she moved out/got kicked out because she wasn't following the rules. Moriah shows Micah a letter they got from Lydia. Micah says they aren't allowed to see their siblings unless their parents are there to supervise.
Two blocks away from Micah and Moriah’s shared house is the new Plath family house. Kim & Barry moved off the farm and into a house that they had originally been looking at as an investment property but fell in love with for themselves. Kim says things are still the same in terms of house rules: the kids can’t have phones, have to be supervised to watch movies and use the internet, must wear appropriate clothing, aren’t allowed to eat much sugar, etc. Kim says that her kids that didn't agree with the rules have fractured the family. Kim & Barry decided that if Micah and Moriah couldn't live with the rules, they should move out. Kim was worried about 17 year old Moriah moving out, but they're very close by. A few months ago, Ethan & Olivia cut off contact with his parents. The parents won't let them see the children without supervision, so they haven't seen them at all. Lydia is now the oldest child in the house and next in line, and Kim smiles as she says Lydia doesn't seem like she will rebel. Lydia, in her prayer closet, explains how everything has changed in the last year: the family moving from the farm, Moriah and Micah moving out, and Ethan & Olivia cutting off contact. Lydia is excited that she has a prayer closet in the new house, and says it is something she's always wanted. Lydia really misses having Ethan in her life.
Ethan & Olivia are going for a ride in his 1952 MG. Olivia is a little nervous riding in the old car, and says she used to find it romantic when they'd breakdown in an old car, but now she doesn't want to be the subject of talk in their small town. The junior Plath couple often takes odd routes to avoid the senior Plath couple, who moved in 3 blocks away from them. Micah and Moriah are two streets up, so everyone is right in the same area. Ethan & Olivia don't see Micah and Moriah as often as they did the year before, since the younger two are off and flying, but when they do hang out they have a lot of fun. Ethan says a lot has changed, and in the fall the junior Plath couple wasn't allowed to see the kids at all. They were frustrated, and Ethan said they needed space as a couple, so they went no contact with the senior Plaths. As Ethan & Olivia drive along, the car begins to sputter, and Ethan pulls over to fix it. Olivia is frustrated with the situation, as Ethan discovers he is nearly out of gas. Olivia doesn't want to be seen breaking down again, so she gets out as he heads to the gas station. Ethan says that there was a lot of strain between himself and Olivia, especially when his dad told Ethan that his parents could not accept Olivia. That put a lot of strain on their marriage, and Ethan regrets trying to keep the peace instead of standing up for his wife. Divorce was on the table for a hard couple of months, Olivia says, and in order to help fix their marriage they had to cut out everyone who didn't want them to make it. They’re marriage isn’t completely better, but things are better than before and they're working on it.
At Micah and Moriah's, Helena facetimes Micah as he is shaving. They're good friends from his first modeling shoot. The conversation is a little flirty, as Helena asks if Micah is naked (he's in a towel) and shows him her swimsuit (she's on the beach). She tells him she has been impressed with his Instagram and she is proud of his growth. Micah says he is now more comfortable with his body, after growing up with such strict guidelines. Helena says a photographer asked her for a male lead, and she immediately thought of Micah. Micah's modeling career was taking off before the coronavirus pandemic, so he is glad to get more opportunities again.
Micah and Moriah are heading over to their parents' house. As they’re driving, they discuss the way their parents make them feel like they're always at fault. Moriah says this place feels like a cage, and if you stay strong, you get to see the siblings. Lydia's face lights up when she sees Moriah get out of the car, and the young girls rush downstairs to greet them. Kim says her relationship with Micah and Moriah is fragile, and she knows they mostly come to the house to see their siblings. Kim is glad they're here, but everyone is on edge. Micah and Moriah are surprised to see that Isaac is almost as tall as Micah. Isaac is the only boy in the house, so he is glad to get to spend some time with Micah. He shows Micah his room and they play guitar. Both brothers really relish this time playing together. Kim comes in and sits and listens to them play guitar. When she leaves to check on Moriah, Micah asks Isaac about what it's been like since he left. Isaac tells him to come over and visit anytime. Micah says it is hard to visit due to the situation with their parents, but Isaac says he wants to stay out of it for now and when he is older he'll do his own thing. Micah advises him to respect their parents but form his own opinions and ask questions. Micah says he doesn't feel like his parents gave him the best education—they were more worried about the evils in this world—and he wants to hopefully prevent that from happening to his siblings. Isaac says he feels like he can choose who influences him, and he doesn't have to fully go after what his parents, Micah, or Ethan & Olivia do. He can go his own way.
In the girl's room, Moriah, Lydia, and the little girls are hanging out. Kim says she isn't sure what Micah and Moriah are thinking or how resentful they are, and she feels like they're all walking on eggshells. Moriah asks Lydia about her love life, and Lydia hems and haws for a moment. Moriah says she sees that there is someone, but Lydia says she doesn't have a boyfriend, and there might be someone she is interested in, but she won't say anything else. Lydia says right now it is just between her and God. Moriah asks to hang out with Lydia again, and Lydia says she would love that, and to coordinate it with Kim. Moriah asks if Lydia has a phone, and she says no but she will get one...someday. Moriah asks if she has friends she hangs out with, and Lydia says not in the area; most of her friends are far away. But she has Moriah. Lydia asks Moriah if there are things that Lydia thinks and does that seem crazy to Moriah. Moriah says none of what Lydia does is crazy, but if she were in Lydia's shoes, Moriah would feel caged in. Lydia says she doesn't feel caged in. Lydia says she's experienced the outside world just enough to know that it's not for her. Moriah asks if Lydia thinks there is something wrong with Moriah, and Lydia says Moriah has a different journey than her. Moriah says she and Lydia respect each other, and even though they disagree, they don't try to change each other. Moriah wishes that is how it was with her parents.
Barry comes out and asks if Micah and Moriah will spend some time with their parents on the patio. Kim asks what they've been up to. Micah is still working at the car repair place. Kim asks about modeling, and Micah asks how she knows about modeling. Kim says people send her screenshots. Micah asks who, and Kim says lots of people. Kim tells Moriah she knows Moriah has a boyfriend, and Moriah says she doesn't want to talk about that. The parents seem to accept this boundary. Micah and Moriah are disappointed that they work hard to keep stuff private from their parents, yet their parents find out things anyway. Moriah says she works at the gym and autoshop, and she is working on school as well. Moriah says she wants to go to college eventually, but she has to do a lot of work to get ready for it since she is going from homeschool to college. Micah says education is his biggest frustration with how they were raised and asks why Kim & Barry didn't prepare them more. Kim says she gave them schoolwork, but they didn't do it. Kim says she has gotten stricter about Lydia and Isaac doing their schoolwork before they can work. Kim says Micah did well on the Grade 12 Standardized tests. Micah says none of them have a diploma, and they have to get GEDs to do anything with their lives. Micah says that, as a parent, you should want your kids to go further than you did in life, but it is hard to prepare your kids for the modern world when you're trying to keep them from it. Barry says you want your child to understand you did the best you can, but parents don't have it all down either. Barry says they are in the learning phase, and it is cool to see. Moriah says you can't live in a bubble—in life there will be pitfalls and you have to learn to navigate them. Kim says that, at the same time, you can make smart decisions to keep yourself from hurting yourself or others. Moriah asks what she means, and she says it's about sex. Micah asks why they didn't talk to them about sex earlier—like at age 13 or 14, and Kim says the last two years they were in the home she didn't feel like she could talk to them about anything. Barry asks if Micah and Moriah can forgive him and Kim, and Moriah says it depends on what forgiveness is: is it acting like nothing ever happened? And Barry says it isn't. Micah asks his parents to give his younger siblings a better chance in the world. Moriah says she hopes they aren't too upset, and Barry says he loves them unconditionally and the door is always open for them to stop by. If they need space, that's okay, but they'll always love them.
*Episode 2: My Mystery Man
Micah is in Tallahassee with Helena to do a sexy photoshoot in a hotel. Micah met Helena on his first shoot last year, and he is excited to show her his progress. Helena says she has some ideas for the photoshoot, and Micah says he knows she'll make it good. Helena says she is surprised with how flirtatious Micah is. Micah says he has come a long way from his modest roots—he’s done a 180 in a positive direction. Helena says she likes confident, sexy Micah. The makeup artist and photographer arrive, and the shoot begins. Micah says when he was little, he always wanted to farm since that was all he knew, but now he wants to travel and model.
At the new Plath house, Barry and Isaac are clearing trees to make room for a swimming pool. Barry is excited for the new pool. He tells Isaac they make a good team and that Isaac is a hard worker. Barry, thinking of his conversation with Micah and Moriah, and wants to take the chance to connect with Isaac. Barry talks about the season of big change and that Micah is dating. Barry asks if Isaac has talked to them about all the change. Isaac is so awkward and uncomfortable. Barry says Isaac is approaching the season of change and he wants to know if Isaac has any questions. Isaac smiles uncomfortably. In a talking head, Isaac says he wasn't ready for this conversation. Barry tells Isaac he will soon grow an interest in girls. In a talking head, Isaac says he talks about girls with his friends. Isaac says he is interested in girls but doesn't want to talk about that with his dad. Barry says if he ever has questions he can ask. They return to tree cutting, and Isaac is thrilled the conversation is over.
Back at the photoshoot, Helena suggests moving to taking pictures on the bed. Helena suggests they do some "pillow talk" and is forced to explain it to sweet Micah. Micah says he used to be self-conscious, and it is funny to see how confident he is now as he changes into boxers and briefs. Helena is really proud of him taking control and being confident. Helena says there was chemistry there between them. They take some shots of Micah in the shower, and some more by the hotel room window. It is a very sexual shoot.
At Ethan & Olivia's, it is time for breakfast. Ethan says they are focusing on their marriage. Olivia says she was up until 1:30am working on her website. Covid has really impacted her steady income, and she is hoping to come back stronger afterwards. Olivia asks Ethan to take care of himself for breakfast, and Ethan offers to make her breakfast. He hasn't cooked for Olivia—or really cooked ever—in his life. Ethan he says he is going to figure it out himself, and Olivia watches him as she is working. Olivia is frustrated with all his talking while she is trying to work in the kitchen. Olivia expresses that she is working and he needs to respect it, but Ethan says he would always rather have fun than work. Olivia says she is on her period, hormonal, and Ethan apologizes for forgetting about that. Ethan says he wasn't given a toolkit to communicate emotions in his youth, and he tends to block things. Ethan apologizes to Olivia, and she really appreciates it. Olivia tells Ethan that he should try having a period, and he says they should get one of those simulators. Ethan says that even though he had a lot of sisters growing up, he never knew there was such thing as a period until he was dating Olivia. Ethan really wonders how he never realized it in that small house.
Lydia is going over to have dinner with Moriah, which is something she has been looking forward to. Lydia is learning to drive, so Kim accompanies her on the drive. Kim says there was an intense conversation with Micah and Moriah a few days ago and that they are all trying to find a balance. Kim says Lydia is grounded enough to not get swayed by Moriah, and she thinks keeping the sister relationship alive may help bring Moriah back into the family. Moriah is cooking her first meal for Lydia, and Moriah says she didn't know her mom would come in. She finishes in the kitchen and comes out to greet them. Kim offers Moriah a book on fashion and then leaves.
Moriah shows Lydia their place, and they sit down at the table. There is a box of cereal on the table. Both sisters laugh, and Moriah reveals that she is kidding—Moriah has cooked steak, mac’n’cheese, and salad. Lydia is duly impressed. Moriah really wants to hear more about Lydia's hinted interest in a boy from their last talk. Lydia stalls by eating. Lydia asks Moriah to tell her how this someone is doing, since this boy has reached out to Moriah to ask about Lydia. He is a guy they've both known for a while but haven’t seen in two years, and Lydia says she recently realized she still likes him. Moriah says he is really sweet. Lydia asks Moriah for advice—she doesn't want to push anything, but she isn’t quite sure what to do. Moriah is touched she is asking for advice and tries to keep Lydia in mind. Lydia says she doesn't want to do anything without their parents knowing, and Moriah tells her to just ask them. Moriah suggests writing him a letter, something simple and sweet to let him know she is thinking of him. Lydia says it's been a long two years, and she really would like to see this mystery man.
Micah works out at home, joking around to make Moriah laugh. Moriah asks about the photoshoot in Tallahassee, and Micah says it was so fun and it pushed his boundaries and he can't wait to see the photos. Moriah tells Micah that she had dinner with Lydia and Lydia is still interested in the person she was interested in two years ago. Micah says whoever ends up with Lydia will be one of the luckiest guys—the second luckiest, Moriah jokes, after the guy who ends up with her.
At Ethan & Olivia's, Ethan is fixing up a 1995 motorcycle from a junkyard. He loves fixing up old stuff, and Ethan hopes one day they can take it on trips and cruise around the country. Ethan says this is an escape for him, and he wishes he was as good at fixing relationships as he was at fixing cars or bikes. Ethan says he knows Olivia is really hurt from the past year and has lost income from weddings. They're also no contact with his parents, and Ethan says a lot of the strain came from instances when he didn't stand up for Olivia like he should. Ethan says he knows he will get the bike fixed, and as far as their marriage goes, he will keep trying.
Moriah is preparing to go on her first real date, and she says she isn't sure what her parents would think of this. Dating or even friendship with a boy was wrong growing up—you had to pick your guy from a distance, and Moriah didn't like that. Moriah's date arrives on a motorcycle, and she is excited to get to ride a motorcycle. Moriah enjoys getting to ride it, and says it made her feel free. They pull up to a diner, and Moriah gets ice cream and her date, Max, gets a muffin. He jokes that he is not afraid to eat on the first date. Max says he used to have to wait days to hear back from Moriah, who explains her family isn't good at communicating. Max asks why she moved out early, and Moriah is nervous to tell him about her family. Moriah tells Max about her siblings—Max, himself, is one of eight—and Moriah says her parents are very religious and strict, and that Moriah had a list of rules to follow. She would follow their rules and ask to go out, but they would say no. So, Moriah started sneaking out, and her parents told her she had to leave the house. Max is supportive of her, and Moriah is thrilled since she's been craving that. Moriah says she is scared and feels like it is a gamble with her heart, but she wants to just take it one step at a time.
*Episode 3: You Can’t Stop the Girl
Olivia wakes Ethan up, and Ethan says they're going through a tough point in their relationship. Ethan says he is working on it, and they're taking steps to make it better. Olivia says she feels like a new person, and she likes it. Ethan says he likes her, but Olivia says she is just changing appearance things, like cutting her hair and piercing her nose. Olivia says she wants to go get her navel pierced today. Ethan isn't big on piercings, and says it is since his first experience seeing a piercing was on an overweight person. Olivia tells him that is rude. Still, she asks him if he really opposes the idea of her getting this piercing. He agrees he'll get used to it. Olivia says she grew up in a patriarchal circle where the man always has to say yes, so it rubs her the wrong way when men tell her not to do things. Ethan is disappointed they won't be able to have sex due to the piercing, but Olivia says there are lot of positions that will be fine.
At Micah and Moriah's, Moriah is writing a song in her room, and Micah comes in to ask her about it. Moriah says the song is about Max, the boy she is dating. They see each other two or three times a week, but she is nervous since it is her first relationship. Micah is the only one who knows about and has met Max. Micah tells her not to rush things, but he is excited for her and he likes Max. Micah says he is her big brother, and he does have more experience in relationships and wants her to be careful. He says he once made a commitment before he even knew the other person, and it is difficult to handle relationships when they didn't have a lot of relationships growing up. Moriah says she didn't plan on dating, but you can't control when someone walks into your life. Moriah and Micah get their instruments and she sings the song for him. It is about opening up and being vulnerable with people, and there are people who will like you just the way you are. Moriah says she doesn't want to lose whatever this is. Micah tells her he loves her song.
Olivia & Ethan head off to the piercing parlor, and Ethan doesn't know what to expect. Ethan says he would never consider getting a piercing. Ethan says he is a little nervous for her getting a hole poked in her belly button. They arrive at the parlor, and mask up. Ethan is shocked by the inside of the parlor, with the tattoos on the walls and some weapons on display. Olivia fills out a form while Ethan looks around the parlor, and he is overwhelmed by the stuff around them. Ethan says he's seen paintings before—they were by "Leo DaVincinardi maybe?” He concludes the artist was either a painter or an Italian gangster. As they prepare to do the piercing, Ethan is nervous, but it goes very smoothly. Ethan says it was painful to watch, and Olivia says it hurt pretty bad. She had a good spirit about it, though. Ethan says that, as an adult, he is working to form his own opinions apart from the opinions of his family and upbringing. It will take three months to fully heal the belly button piercing, they say. "That's a long time," Ethan remarks.
Back at the farm, the family is preparing to welcome a family from Australia, who will rent the farmhouse and property. Kim finds Moriah's writings on the wall of a closet and is surprised by the edge to it. Kim says it hurts to read them, and she didn't realize Moriah was hurting that bad. Kim says there are a lot of good and bad emotions at the farm. Kim says it hurts that Ethan has cut them out, and she is determined to not let it happen with their younger children.
Growing up, the Plaths never celebrated 4th of July. So, this year, Ethan, Olivia, Micah, and Moriah are looking forward to making their own traditions. Micah says they are celebrating two types of freedom: the country’s and their own. Everyone is excited to see each other, and the plan is to get some fireworks and cook hotdogs over a campfire. The Plath parents found something wrong with each holiday, so they never celebrated any. The siblings talk about climbing trees on the farm to watch the neighbor's fireworks. They head to the store for fireworks. At the store, all the Plaths are excited by their options and pick out a bunch of stuff. There is a firework called "One Bad Mother-in-Law," which Olivia says she wants. All the Plaths chuckle at that, and they decide to get it.
Kim & Barry take their kids to the farm to meet the Australian family who is renting the farm. Skyler and Ross Gilbert are the couple renting the property, and they are here in the US due to Ross's work as a leadership mentor. They don't tend to stay in the same place for long. They practice "world schooling," where the world is their school and they travel around. Barry admires this about them. Kim mentions that Lydia wants to travel the world, and that she really wants to go to Romania. One of the little girls says the furthest from Georgia she's been is Minnesota. The Gilberts say they relate to the Plaths since they are protecting their kids from the bad stuff they see in middle and high school, but there is a lot of good in the world to see. A storm rolls in, and both families rush for cover.
Olivia, Ethan, Micah, and Moriah light sparklers, and Olivia proposes a toast over them. All the Plaths talk about their wishes for the next year: growth for Olivia, a trip to the Grand Canyon for Ethan, getting out of Cairo for Moriah, and being single for Micah. Micah says he was in a relationship but it ended, which hurt. Micah says he thought you had to marry the first person you had feelings for, but that isn't true. Olivia asks if their upbringing is a hindrance for dating, and Micah agrees. Olivia says that, at their age, she was so entrenched by what they were taught. Olivia wants to see Micah and Moriah do well and not make the same mistakes she and Ethan made: during their dating relationship, her parents and in-laws made all the decisions for them. Ethan says his mom once saw Ethan kiss Olivia on the cheek and commented on how close to the lips it was. Olivia says they got married so young due to the restrictions: they weren’t allowed to text until they got engaged, and they were only allowed to talk on the phone for one hour every three months—it was really stupid. Moriah says she wants to move slow in her relationship, so they don't end up losing something special. Olivia says she wishes they had thought things through before, and she hopes they learn from them. Micah says Ethan & Olivia have been a great example for them, and he is glad to have them as siblings.
Back at the picnic, the families have moved inside. A Gilbert boy, Levi, asks Isaac for his favorite movie, and Isaac can't name one. Kim says it is hard being on the farm and watching their family all interact together. The Gilberts offer them Australian chocolate biscuits, and Kim talks about their general avoidance of sugar, but this is a special opportunity for them to try Australian food. Levi demonstrates a "tim tam slam," where you bite both ends of the cookie, and use the wafers inside as a straw to drink milk. All the Plaths enjoy it, and then they end up heading out. Kim says it does her heart good to see a family enjoying the farm.
Back at Ethan & Olivia's, it is nearly time for fireworks. But first, each of them has a lantern, and they write down what they want to let go of on the lantern. Olivia writes about letting go of fear and never letting her voice get taken from her. Micah writes about improving his self-control. Ethan wrote "my parents." Ethan says he feels like he was extremely sheltered, and it has impacted every aspect of his life. He says it is degrading not being able to see his siblings. Moriah writes about letting go of her past but remembering what it taught her, chasing her dreams, and following her black heart. They sent their lanterns up, and then it is time for fireworks. It is a fun celebration for the siblings.
*Episode 4: Open to Falling in Love
At the gym where she works, Moriah is teaching a yoga class. She works at a gym and the mechanics class. Moriah teaches every once in a while, and she is enjoying her independence. Moriah learned yoga when she went to Minnesota to stay with her grandparents. She loves how relaxing yoga is, and she also loves fitness and working out, which is a major stress relief for her. Moriah is busy at the moment, working her jobs, spending time with her boyfriend, and trying to move out of Cairo as soon as she can.
Barry and Isaac are heading to the gym, since Barry wants to connect with Moriah. They walk in late to her yoga class, and Barry starts waving his arms around at the back of the room to get her attention. Moriah ignores him and continues teaching. When she sees him, she makes a face, acknowledges them, and keeps teaching. Moriah is confused at their appearance but maintains her composure and keeps going. Barry and Isaac exit, and Barry says Moriah's path is different to Hosanna and Lydia's path. Barry says she didn't do what they wanted at home, but she has the ability to be a hard worker and he is proud of her. Isaac and Barry train with weights as her class ends, and Isaac goes over to see her. Isaac says he misses Moriah, but he is always excited to her see her. Moriah teases Isaac and says she is hurt he didn't join her class. Isaac says he isn't flexible enough, and Moriah says that is the point of the class. Moriah goes back to work, and Barry and Isaac finish their workout. Moriah says maybe their talk got through to her parents, and she hopes Barry is trying to support her.
At Ethan & Olivia's, they are looking online at houses outside of Cairo. They want to move away from this town since it is so small. Cairo only has one grocery store—it’s basically impossible to fully avoid his parents. Olivia says looking at houses in other cities makes her feel better when she is stuck in Cairo. Olivia says she has shown Ethan homes before, but he wasn't taking it too seriously. Olivia says with everything going on, she has been looking for homes and wanting to move their 5 year plan timeline up a bit. There's a house about 30 minutes away, which is commuting distance for Ethan but further out from the parents. Olivia shows him the house, and Ethan likes it, particularly the garage. Ethan suggests calling a realtor. Ethan says ideally he wouldn't move, since he worked hard for this house. They decide they will call the realtor and set up an appointment to see the house anyway.
Micah is out and about, being foolish with his friends, and he hit a curb drifting. Micah is worried he has majorly damaged his car, which he sold over half his cows to buy, and he is worried he will have to sell the rest of them to fix it. Micah is frustrated with himself for doing something stupid, especially right before his date with Helena today. It's hard to sweep a girl off her feet with a skateboard, Micah says.
Barry & Kim are learning how to video conference, since their oldest daughter Hosanna is pregnant and out of state. Lydia is listening in and wants to help them figure out how to video call her. Kim and Hosanna are on different phone platforms (Kim has an Android). Lydia says she can't be any help in this situation but asks if they thought about a timeframe for Lydia getting a phone of her own. Kim says she doesn't need a smartphone, but Lydia could start with just a regular phone when she gets her license. With a phone, Lydia would be able to contact her older siblings. Kim finds an app that works on both platforms, but first she has to figure out how to sign into the app store.
On their house hunt, Olivia says she wants to live in a place with more culture. Olivia is very happy to be in Thomasville, which has more going on. Ethan says he wants to take things one step at a time, especially the house buying process. Ethan & Olivia meet the realtors, and Olivia is excited about this house. It's in a better school district for future kids, and it has a garage for Ethan's cars and a home office for her. It's move in ready, and a great neighborhood. Ethan says growing up on the farm, his closest neighbor was one mile away, but here there are neighbors everywhere in Thomasville. Ethan likes the garage, but it fits two cars, and they have six total. Olivia likes the house, and the realtors say they would likely need to write an offer quickly if they're interested. Olivia says she is impulsive, and she makes her best decisions under pressure. She wants to put an offer in, but she wants to hear what Ethan thinks first. Ethan says he likes the house, and he thinks it’s pretty nice and he could see himself living there. Ethan says they're going to call the bank and see if they can make this work.
Micah & Helena are going out for a burger, and they are excited to spend time together. Helena was the first person Micah modeled with, and they've stayed in touch since. Micah & Helena sit and eat in the back of her car. They talk about moving and skateboards. Micah's car is in the shop, and Helena knows he is a little embarrassed she drove on their date. Helena asks Micah what his goals are, and he says it is modeling—it’s his passion. Helena says she believes he is going to make his name in this industry. Helena says modeling is changing and becoming more open to more people. Micah was sheltered, he says, so he doesn't know any different than what he knows now. Micah says Helena is a good friend and beautiful, and he is open to seeing what develops. The pair smile awkwardly at each other in the back of the car, and Micah says he is open to falling in love—he wants to get settled first—but anything could happen. Helena says she sees Micah is attracted to her, but she thinks he is in a place where women are starting to notice him as a man, and if they were to date she would want to make sure he was only pursuing her. Micah says he wanted to make a move, but it was awkward on camera. The date concludes, and Helena drives Micah home.
At their house, Moriah is playing her guitar and singing. Max calls her and asks what she is up to. Moriah tells him she is working on songs, and he says he can't wait to hear them. Moriah says it is hard for her to share songs, and she says she has trouble opening up to anyone, especially those closest to her. It's her first relationship, but it's not Max's first, so she is still learning. Moriah says she has been busy, and Max asks if she really is that busy that she hasn't been making time for him. She says some of it is being busy, but she's also been dealing with a lot emotionally and says they should talk more tonight. Moriah says she has to learn how to open about what she is thinking and feeling. They end the call, and Moriah goes back to singing.
Lydia says she has seen her siblings having conflicts with her parents, but she has released it to God to let him deal with it. There are some days she just prays all day, and it brings her peace in the midst of the hardest storms. Ethan cut contact with their parents, which was hard for Lydia since he is not in her life right now. Lydia loves to write letters, but she hasn't written to Ethan since she doesn't think she could bear it if he told her not to communicate with him. Lydia says right now all she can do is hope and pray and know something good will come out of it.
Moriah & Max meet up, and they sit on a dock to talk. Max says there has been some stuff on his heart, and Moriah asks if they are okay. Max says he really likes her, but he thinks they aren't compatible right now. Max says she freezes up if he confronts her about something, and he feels like he has put in a lot more than she has, and recently she hasn't been into the phone conversations at all. He feels like they could work through all this, but she wouldn't communicate that to him. He isn't sure if that comes from her upbringing, but he thinks they should address their problems and find solutions. Moriah says she has a hard time opening up, and it keeps getting harder and harder as she goes on. Max says opening up is hard, but time after time he tried and she just shut him out. Max says he thinks they should take a step back. Moriah asks if he is breaking up with her. He nods, and Moriah is surprised. Moriah says she is scared to let go. Moriah asks Max to stay her friend—she says he doesn't realize how much he has done for her and been there for her, and she doesn't want to lose that connection. Max says if they stay friends, they have to do three things: (1) set a boundary, (2) teach him to dance, and then (3) Max wants to meet her parents. Max says a lot of Moriah's communication style comes from her past, and if he knows her past he can understand her more. Moriah says it scares her to have him meet the family, so she thinks he should. Moriah is frustrated by her lack of communication skills, but it is up to her to rewrite the story. Max says he does want to end up with Moriah, but they have some learning to do going forward. Moriah says she'll keep learning from here.
*Episode 5: Friend or Boyfriend?
When Max & Moriah broke up, Max asked to meet her parents. Moriah says Max wants to meet her parents to understand her more and see where she came from, but Moriah is worried about bringing someone around her parents. Moriah says a piece of her will always hope to get back together with Max, but she isn’t bringing him home with any particular motive. Micah helps her write a text message to their parents. Micah says he once introduced a girl to his parents, and he regrets it. He says they’re really judgmental. Moriah sends the message, and they wait. Kim replies with a “sure,” and Micah wishes Moriah the best.
At the Plath house, Kim is guiding her daughters through a ballet class. They’ve been doing ballet for about a month. The girls have fun with ballet, and they say their mom did it when she was 20 or 30. Kim says she studied ballet in college and was dancing en pointe in a company by her fourth year of college. Kim says she structures it like a real ballet class, and her goal is to teach them. Kim says the older children complain about their education, and she hopes they will see they had a well-rounded education with music as well. Kim says Moriah in particular has a music career ahead of her.
Ethan & Olivia are shopping, picking out some alcohol to enjoy. Ethan gets alcoholic root beer and whiskey (which he hasn’t tried before). Olivia debates between margaritas and prosecco. Ethan sees jello shots near the register and was surprised by the sexual names: “sex on the beach” and “buttery nipples.” Olivia says Ethan is so curious, but constantly surprised by all the things he’s never heard of. Ethan says he still doesn’t have any relationship with his parents. Back at home, Ethan is preparing to try the whiskey and Olivia tells him to drink it right from the bottle. He takes a sip, and he likes it. He says he thinks it is better than beer. Ethan says he thinks he’s a whiskey guy. Olivia suggests jamming on the piano, and Ethan begins to play for her. He plays jazz. Olivia begins to play next, something more classic. And Ethan says that the jazz goes with whiskey and old cars flying down dirt roads. Ethan says the differences in their piano playing go with the differences in their personalities and what they bring to the relationship.
Micah is meeting up with Isaac and their dad, and they’re going fishing. Micah wishes he could be alone with Isaac—after all, it isn’t like he is going to show him porn; Barry says he needs more conversations with Micah to know where he’s at before he’ll leave Isaac alone with Micah. They begin fishing, and Isaac is glad to spend time with Micah. After a while, they give up on fishing, and Isaac shows Micah a new swing he built. The brothers jump into the water, and generally have fun hanging out for a bit.
Max arrives at Moriah’s and is preparing to meet Kim & Barry. Max wants to meet her family to better understand her. Moriah is scared that Max will like the front her parents put up, and Moriah says she acts different around her family. The pair heads out.
At the Plath house, Kim is preparing to meet Max and is hopeful about this meeting. Moriah arrives and introduces Max to her mom and asks for her sisters. Kim says when she meets him, she’s thinking Max is more than just a friend—he’s good looking, and so is Moriah, so they must be dating. They go into the next room, and Moriah hugs Lydia. Max meets Barry and Lydia. Lydia is giddy to meet Max. Moriah asks about her little sisters again, and Barry says they’re waiting to deploy the little girls in “Phase 2,” but Moriah insists on seeing them. Kim whispers in Moriah’s ear: friend or boyfriend? And Moriah says: just a friend. She goes and finds the little girls and brings them out to give them a hug. Moriah says she is a lot more comfortable with them around. Max tells them about himself, and jokes about showing up in his dad’s minivan. Kim & Barry seem to like him. Isaac tells Max about his love of flying and his hopes to one day join the air force. Max says he feels like Kim & Barry were nice and welcoming. Isaac tells Max about his flight simulator and invites him to try it. Moriah also goes off with her sisters, and asks them what they think about Max. She tells Lydia about the breakup. Lydia says Moriah’s form of dating is very different than Ethan & Olivia’s and Hosanna & Timothy’s courtships. It’s different, but it’s totally Moriah. Meanwhile, Isaac is guiding Max through the flight simulator.
Downstairs, Kim & Barry chat. Kim says: Moriah has a lot of friends, and she doesn’t usually bring them around. What makes this one different? And Max comes down to talk with them. Max jokes about crashing on the flight simulator, and then Barry asks if Moriah has told him about “their adventures.” Max sips water, and then finally answers “yeah.” Upstairs, Moriah realizes that Max is talking to her parents alone, and she heads down immediately. Max talks about visiting the farm, and Moriah arrives downstairs. Kim asks if he knows he’s the first guy Moriah brought home, and Max says he knew it but hadn’t really thought about it. Max asks how they feel about it, and they say they’re excited and glad he stopped by. Max asks Moriah how she feels about it, and she says she needs about a month to process it. Moriah says she wanted them to meet him, since he’s her best friend. Max says he appreciates Kim & Barry letting him come over. Kim says she was expecting another lecture about all the things she’s done wrong as a parent, but instead Moriah wanted to include them in something, which gives her hope. Max and Moriah decide to head out, and Moriah wonders where her friendship with Max will go from here.
At Ethan & Olivia’s, Ethan is fixing the washing machine. He says fixing things was how he entertained himself growing up. Olivia asks if he’s heard from the realtor, and Ethan says yeah: they didn’t get the house, someone else got it. Olivia is disappointed—she really wanted to move. Olivia is desperate to get out of Cairo. Olivia says she doesn’t know how they can get what they need, and Ethan says he wants them to be happy and okay, but he doesn’t know how to make that happen. Olivia says she tries to tell him, but it’s like talking to a blank wall. Olivia says she needs boundaries to feel safe, and everywhere she looks around Cairo she sees triggers. Ethan says he didn’t want to tell her about not getting the house since she would be disappointed, and he shouldn’t have treated her this way. Olivia says that, due to his upbringing, it is hard for Ethan to understand how she feels, but he thinks this time he understood a little bit.
*Episode 6: A Moment of Doubt
The episode opens with Micah posting skateboarding videos on Instagram. It then moves to the skatepark, where Micah is skating with a friend, Ashburn. Micah has been skating for two months, and he met this friend at church before his parents quit going. Micah says they didn’t have a lot of friends growing up, and Micah has been enjoying making real friends since he got his freedom. Ashburn says Micah has changed a lot, and he is trying a lot of new things. Micah says having friends outside of the circles they grew up in is eye opening, and he is enjoying pushing boundaries and discovering who he is.
At Ethan & Olivia’s, Olivia is making the bed and reflecting on how disappointed she is that they didn’t get the house. Olivia is really excited since they are going to get a couples tattoo—a first for both of them. But Ethan isn’t crazy about the idea. Ethan did select the tattoo they would be getting, and that’s why he agreed. Ethan arrives home from work, and he is clearly not sure about this idea. Olivia says he seemed excited about this last week, and Ethan says he was okay with getting a little tattoo if it was their thing, but Olivia talked about adding on to it one day and then they wouldn’t match. Olivia says she doesn’t know what she is going to want in the future. Ethan says he isn’t a confrontational person, but sometimes he wishes Olivia would consider his feelings. In the end, they decide to go through it, and Olivia says she wants a little part of him on her forever. They have a big hug, and it is time to leave.
[TW: Death]
At the family’s house, the three little girls are enjoying boiled peanuts and they ask their mother about Joshua and what he looked like. Joshua died in an accident at 17 months old, when Kim moved a vehicle. Kim says that if she could redo a moment in her life, it would be that one. Kim says it was the worst thing she has ever been through, and she is her biggest accuser. After he died, Kim shut down and it was really hard. Kim says the little girls don’t have any anger about it since they weren’t born yet. Kim says Joshua would be 13 and that it’s hard for her to talk and think about him since the accident. She thinks the trauma of his death has impacted the relationship with her older children. The little girls get distracted, but Kim is glad they could have the conversation.
[/TW: Death]
At Moriah and Micah’s, Moriah recaps her relationship with Max and the fact that they are now just friends. Moriah says she associates opening up with weakness, and that is due to the way she was raised. But she now realizes being vulnerable makes you feel more free and opening up is a huge strength. Moriah says she is pushing herself to open up and be a better friend. Moriah says she misses Max and will invite him over to do something.
Ethan & Olivia arrive at the tattoo parlor, and Ethan is nervous. They each position their stencils, and Ethan is really having doubts about going through with it. Olivia goes first, and Ethan holds her hand as she gets the tattoo. Olivia says it isn’t that bad, and the artist quickly completes the tiny tattoo. Ethan gets in the chair, and he is nervous about this. Olivia says he can still back out, but he goes ahead. Ethan says he wanted to do it since it meant something to both of them. Ethan & Olivia got the King and Queen of Hearts for their tattoo, since they are the king and queen of each other’s hearts. Ethan says he thought it was romantic and was glad they got them.
[TW: Death]
Kim & Barry are going on a walk, which is something they do daily. Kim tells him that the little girls were asking about Joshua. Kim talks about her memories with Joshua, how sweet and snuggly he was. Barry recalls reading him a book about ducks, which he loved, the night before he passed. Kim says she thinks the family should go to the cemetery, and Barry says they can celebrate the 17 months they had with him. Barry says they should invite Micah and Moriah, but not Ethan & Olivia since they have gone no contact.
[/TW: Death]
Olivia facetimes a friend to discuss their upcoming trip to California to shoot a lot of photo and video promos for her rebrand. Olivia is excited for the rebranding and having a video would be new to her. Ethan is interested in the trip and asks if he could go with Olivia to California. He’s never been, and Olivia’s friend says it would be fun. Olivia says they have to figure out the logistics, but it would be fun to show Ethan California, since it is her favorite state.
At Micah and Moriah’s, Moriah has asked Max over to help her hang lights in the backyard. Moriah says she loves Max so much, but she doesn’t think he feels the same way. Max asks if this is a random “just set up lights,” and Moriah says yes. Max jokes that she just wanted to see him, and she says she missed being friends. They talk about meeting her family, and Moriah talks about how she isn’t sure what the future holds with her and her family. Moriah says taking him home was nerve-wracking, and Max says he was glad to be the first boy she brought home, even just as friends. And Moriah says it is good that they’re just friends, so the romance element wasn’t something they had to deal with. They finish hanging the lights, and Max reminds Moriah about her promise to teach him to dance. Under the lights, Moriah teaches Max how to waltz. Moriah says she took ballroom dance and ballet with her mom and other 60 year olds, since she wasn’t allowed to be in a relationship. As they dance, it is very flirty, and Moriah says, “this isn’t friends.” Max thanks her for having him over and dancing with him, and the lights turned out good too. Max then kisses her and hugs her. Moriah asks if they can pray really quick. She says she doesn’t really pray anymore, but in the moment she knew it wasn’t something she wanted to lose and she thought a prayer could help. Moriah prays about their relationship. Max says while she was praying, it was like God saying you can’t keep her waiting and asks if they can work this out. Moriah says yes, and they kiss again. Moriah says her first kiss was everything she could have asked for. Max says ending up together tonight wasn’t the plan, but they both seem happy with how things turned out.
*Episode 7: The Open Road
Micah, Moriah, Ethan, and Olivia meet up to have a little picnic. Ethan & Olivia show their tattoos, and Micah and Moriah are surprised but pleased with Ethan making this choice. They start talking about old funny videos the siblings used to make. Olivia pulls the videos from old memory cards for everyone to watch, and they all start laughing. Ethan says watching the old videos reminds him of how much he misses his siblings. Ethan hates that his parents use his siblings as collateral, and he wishes he could tell them how he feels.
At the family’s house, Lydia calls her mom in to talk with her. Lydia tells her mom that several years ago, she had a crush on a boy but she got overwhelmed by it. Lydia thinks he is interested and has been praying about it. Lydia says she doesn’t think it's God’s will, and she wants to just step back and wait for the right guy. Kim says Lydia is a special young lady, and God has a special man for her. Kim tells Lydia that she and Barry had pasts before they got married and says Lydia shouldn’t follow in her footsteps. Kim says she wishes she had this type of relationship with her older children, but she doesn’t know how to make that happen.
At Micah and Moriah’s house, Micah wakes up to take Ethan to the airport. He does a montage of flexing and getting ready in the mirror, and then he goes to pick up Ethan. Ethan says this has been a tough year, and he is looking forward to this trip to California and having a break for him and Olivia to focus on each other. Ethan says he is excited but a little nervous about how different it will be out there. Micah says Ethan doesn’t like change. Ethan got Olivia a surprise, but he knows she doesn’t like surprises, so it is a little bit nerve-wracking. Micah says, “bye, I love you!” and Ethan doesn’t say it back. Micah says Ethan isn’t used to that.
Lydia is allowed to go over to Micah and Moriah’s house to have a girl’s night. Moriah suggests they do a fashion show with her clothes. Lydia says she would never wear Moriah’s clothes because they’re not her style. Moriah says she would describe her style the way her grandfather would: somebody ran out of fabric. Moriah finds one dress that she thinks Lydia will wear, and Lydia says she will try it on for her. Lydia says the Bible says the body is a temple, and she believes in covering it up. Lydia says, “I guess you could say God’s my fashion designer.” Lydia comes out in the dress, and she has kept her tank top on underneath and she says it is short. Moriah says that, growing up, they basically wore bedsheets. Lydia tries something else on, and she says it is really, really short. However, she does come out and lets Moriah to take a picture in it. Moriah says she wants Lydia to take time out to find her identity independent of the family. Micah arrives home and is happy to see Lydia there. He is excited to see her trying Moriah’s clothes on, but Lydia is wrapping herself up in a blanket since she isn’t comfortable. She tries on one more dress, and Micah and Moriah gush over how good she looks. Moriah tells her to keep it. Micah says he used to be shy too, but he grew out of it.
In California, Ethan & Olivia are cruising around in a convertible that Ethan splurged on for the trip. Olivia is delighted. As they drive, Ethan smells weed and asks about it. Olivia says it is legal there and asks if he would ever smoke it with her. Ethan absolutely declines, and Olivia says that’s his choice. She also says being in the big city is highlighting some of their differences.
Back at Micah and Moriah’s, Micah starts showing Lydia pictures of him modeling. Moriah says when she saw Micah showing Lydia pictures of him in a speedo, she realized then that this is the last time Lydia would be coming over. Micah heads out to the gym, and Lydia says it was nice to see him. Lydia says some of his modeling makes her uncomfortable, but she says God looks at the heart and she knows it's a good one. Moriah does Lydia’s makeup with purple lipstick, which makes her laugh, and Moriah asks about Lydia’s feelings for the boy. Lydia says she fasted and prayed until she felt peace, and said she realized it wasn’t the right thing to do. Moriah says she thinks it's a good thing, since she found out the boy has a girlfriend. Lydia agrees that that is a good thing, and she has a lot of peace with this being over. Moriah says Lydia doesn’t need a guy; she advises Lydia to focus on herself and be firm in who she is. Lydia says it was nice to spend time with Moriah, even as different as they are; they still can connect and have fun. Lydia changes back and they plan on having some snacks and hanging out.
In LA, Ethan says it is clear he isn’t in Cairo anymore. He is surprised by the fashion, and says people dress like models. In Little Tokyo, they go to a Japanese restaurant. Ethan is nervous and excited to try something new. Ethan starts joking that the chopsticks look like legs, and he’s going to spread the legs. Olivia is embarrassed and tells him to stop talking and start eating. Ethan replies, “I’ll start eating alright.” Olivia asks if Ethan had a dirty mind when they were dating, since he didn’t used to make sexual jokes. Ethan says he didn’t make sexual jokes while they were dating since he thought she’d think he was creep. Ethan is having fun with making sexual jokes about his chopsticks and wonders how he has a dirty mind since he didn’t know about sex until he got married. Ethan tells Olivia about the first time he masturbated, at 13 in the middle of church. He was laying on a chair when it started rocking and he was surprised that it felt good. Olivia says it will be interesting to hear how he talks about sex with his son, and Ethan says when his son is 12 or 13 he’ll tell him: “Nothing that has happened to you is anywhere near as embarrassing as what has happened to me.”
Micah hits the gym and is ready for an intense workout. Micah says being in shape is important to him, plus it is important to his career. Micah says modeling is what he wants to do—he also wants to get out of a small town and see the world. He is motivated to keep going and is excited about his future.
Ethan & Olivia are heading to Joshua Tree, and Ethan is excited to leave the city. They both enjoy driving in the convertible, and Ethan says he is excited to drive the Camaro to Joshua Tree. Both Ethan & Olivia are just thrilled. As they hit the highway, they put the top on the car and admire the desert as they drive through. Olivia asks about a certain button. Ethan says it’s the ejector seat, and if they’re in an accident you push the button and it ejects you out. Olivia asks if he’s pulling her leg, and Ethan grins. He says he’s joking, and he has no idea what the button does. He is thrilled he got her.
They arrive at Joshua Tree and pull into the retreat Olivia booked. There are massages, sound baths (which is new to them), and a lot of places to relax. Ethan is nervous about the “New Age” stuff at the retreat. Olivia thinks she will enjoy them. Olivia asks about a couples massage, and Ethan says no. The guide at the retreat echoes Olivia’s suggestion for the couples massage, and Ethan agrees to try it. Once the guide leaves, Ethan asks if they will massage his feet, and Olivia says yes. Ethan says his “feets stink”.
They head out to the massage, and Ethan is surprised his massage therapist is a woman. He was picturing a hairy, shirtless man, apparently. Ethan makes small talk with the massage therapist the entire time, asking about her career and eventually whether she massages animals. Olivia sits up at that, and Ethan says he had heard of people doing that and just wanted to ask. Olivia tells the therapist that this is her first massage after growing up in a culture that discouraged touch. Ethan does in fact get his feet massaged. The producers ask the therapist if she smelled them, and the therapist says yes but she just does her work. Ethan says if he gets into situations where he needs to get rid of people, he’ll take his shoes off. The massage concludes, and they both ended up really enjoying it. Ethan says they both smell good now, and they can now have a nice evening together and “do what we do best.”
*Episode 8: My Everything
Micah and Moriah are heading to the river with Max and Sarahlyn, a friend of Micah’s. They are excited for a nice day out. Micah hasn’t seen Sarahlyn in like, 8 or 9 years, he says. Moriah asks Micah how many girls he talks to, and Micah and Max laugh it off. Sarahlyn arrives and is surprised by how different Micah looks. Micah tells her about modeling, and Sarahlyn tells him about being homeschooled and then transitioning to Florida State. Sarahlyn says their upbringings were similar—very Christian, skirts only, no secular music—but the Plaths were stricter. Micah asks Moriah about college, and Moriah says she is still thinking about it. She really wants to go, but she has to finish high school and make sure that what she goes for is her passion. Max jokes about the car being full of homeschoolers, and they arrive at the river.
In Joshua Tree, Olivia offers Ethan a weed gummy bear as they head out. They had a good time in Joshua Tree, but now Ethan has a surprise for Olivia. Ethan has planned a visit to someone he found online who works with couples. Ethan is particularly excited for the sexy homework he has been promised. Olivia asks if it’s a voodoo thing, and Ethan says maybe. They arrive, and Olivia is really nervous since she doesn’t like surprises. They arrive at a Metal Works place, and it is strange. They are meeting with a tantra instructor. Olivia is really surprised and unsure.
Their instructor tells them her name, which was given to her by a spiritual teacher. Ethan & Olivia don’t know what to quite make of that. They arrive at a blanket with some cushions, and Ethan declines to take his shoes off. The instructor explains that tantra is an expansion. Ethan is really unsure about this now (even though he booked this!). Ethan says he wants to learn more about how women work in order to improve his marriage. Olivia says Ethan needs to enforce boundaries more. Ethan says his biggest regret is not standing up for Olivia when he should have. He thought if he were nice, their problems with his parents would go away, but he now knows that isn’t true. He wishes he could have a second chance, but he doesn’t feel like he can. The instructor says we can’t change the past, but healing can happen in the present. The instructor says Olivia needs to realize that Ethan knows he can say no—or at least to check in with her first—now. Olivia is crying at this point but declines to share what is causing it. Olivia, in a talking head, says it takes her back to standing on the driveway last year and being humiliated, and Ethan saying nothing. But she knows that Ethan has changed and having new experiences will rebuild their trust.
On the River, Max and Micah take a rope swing into the water. Moriah asks Sarahlyn about picking her major. Sarahlyn says she never expected to go to college. Growing up—especially as a girl—it just wasn’t a thing. Her dad told her she couldn’t go for business, so she picked engineering. [Good for you, Sarahlyn! That’s a hard major.] Moriah says she wishes her parents had been strict with education, and Sarahlyn says her parents have come around and her mom is now supportive. Moriah is hopeful when she hears that. The pairs then go kayaking, and Micah is just having fun. He says he wants to experience new things and get out of his comfort zone. As they kayak, they see a couple of gators and laugh. They then have a kayak race. Next, they jump off a tall tree. Moriah says she wants to skydive to feel like flying, so this tall jump is her beginning to skydiving. Moriah is glad to share moments like this with Max.
Back at the tantra class, Ethan & Olivia sit close together and share what they appreciate about each other: Olivia appreciates Ethan’s humor; Ethan takes a minute to think, and the instructor prompts him to talk about what Olivia is to him. Ethan says “everything,” and Olivia is worried that he should be someone outside of this relationship. But the instructor says that is good and has them breathe. The instructor says there is a lot of love between them, and a lot of learning about themselves and the relationship. The session ends, and Ethan asks Olivia if one of the stone objects near them is a dildo.
Micah gets a Facetime from a modeling agency, called Select, in Miami Beach. They reached out to him over Instagram and are impressed with his online presence. Micah says Select is a fast growing agency and this could be great for him. They invite Micah to come to Miami to meet them, and then they would want to sign him exclusively. Micah is excited to head to Miami to meet with them soon.
Back in CA, Olivia is shooting with a couple on the beach for her business rebrand. Ethan is about to head home, but he wants to give her the gift before he goes. Ethan is watching her work, and he says you can see her passion as she works. Olivia finishes the shoot, and Ethan says he has a surprise for her. Olivia is confused about the surprise—it’s a champagne picnic by the beach. Olivia loves this surprise and laughs as Ethan enjoys his champagne. Olivia says she feels like they have worked through a lot and they are closer to a healthy, happy place. Ethan then reaches into his pocket and says he has something for her.
[TW: Death.]
Moriah and Micah arrive at Joshua’s grave to meet with the rest of their family. They are the first of the family to arrive, and they put flowers on Joshua’s grave. Micah says he wonders what their family would be like if Joshua was still around, and Moriah wishes Ethan was there with them. Moriah says she feels like Joshua would have been Micah’s buddy, since Ethan and Isaac are so close. Micah agrees. Moriah says she feels like Joshua watches over her, and she thinks about him all the time. The rest of the family arrives, and Lydia is glad to have the family together. They all gather around the grave. Lydia talks about the day he passed, and how she, Ethan, and Isaac were in the car with their mother when the accident happened. Kim says she shut down after Joshua’s death and re-lived that moment for many months. Kim reads some of her memories of Joshua. The family is emotional as they discuss their feelings surrounding his death and how it impacted each of them. They have all brought rubber ducks, which Joshua loved, with their names on them for Joshua. Micah and Moriah head out, and Micah says he is glad they could come together over this. The other Plaths remain, and Barry talks about how God has gotten them through this and he can get them through anything.
[/TW: Death]
Back on the beach in California, Ethan is giving Olivia his surprise. It’s a ring, and Ethan says it is a promise to give her the wedding she always wanted. Olivia doesn’t wear her original rings due to their association with their first wedding and Kim. Olivia is so shocked by the surprise, and she feels like this is a fresh start. Olivia is really touched, and genuinely shocked he pulled this off. Olivia is thrilled to get her dream ring in her dream state. They run into the ocean together, and it is really nice to see them reconnect.
*Episode 9: I Came to Say Goodbye
Moriah is recording songs, since music has been a lifelong passion of hers. She gets in the sound booth and works on getting her song right. She says she wrote it when she was miserable back on the farm, and it is important to her to capture it just right. So far, it seems to be going well.
At Ethan & Olivia’s, Ethan has found birthday cards from his siblings growing up. Ethan is worried about his relationships with his younger siblings. Olivia says they have had a lot of conversations about boundaries and how important they are, and Ethan has been ruminating and thinking about his siblings. Ethan says if they’re moving, he wants to go over and say goodbye and he wants to talk to his parents about not letting him see his siblings. Olivia is nervous about this but agrees and asks if she will stay in the car. Olivia says she has said her piece already. Ethan says he feels bad about not standing up for Olivia in their last conversation. Olivia asks if he can park far away from the house, and she is really nervous about this encounter. But Ethan is determined to do this, and he knows what he wants to say. Ethan walks to the front door and knocks.
Barry & Kim open the door, and Ethan says he isn’t coming in but he wants to talk. The siblings watch from the windows as they walk away from the house. Ethan says he came by to tell them, and hopefully his siblings also, that they are moving, and there still will be no contact and he would like to say goodbye to his family before they go. Ethan says he wants them to know that he loves Olivia more than they will ever know and he doesn’t understand why they felt the need to talk about her the way they have—or if they even know that the things they’ve said have put Ethan & Olivia through a lot. Ethan says he isn’t going to let that happen again, and he regrets not standing up for her earlier in their relationship. They’ve made it clear they don’t accept her, so they don’t get him either.
Kim says she hears him. Kim, in a talking head, says she feels misunderstood and that, ever since Ethan met Olivia, everything she’s done has been twisted. Barry thanks Ethan for coming over and letting them know where Ethan & Olivia are at. Ethan reminds Barry the last time Ethan saw his parents, Barry said, “have a nice life living in bondage.” Kim & Barry act like they don’t recall, but Ethan says that when someone says something nasty, it is often the person they said it to who remembers it clearly. Barry also says there’s a misinterpretation, since he was talking about “living in unforgiveness” when he was talking about bondage. Barry says they love Ethan and always will. Ethan asks if he can say goodbye to his siblings, and if they can come to the car to say goodbye to Olivia. Kim asks if Olivia can come up to the yard, and Ethan says no. Kim says it is hard for her to hear everything he just said, and then not want to be all together. Ethan says no again, and Kim says she can’t send her children off to see someone who is talking bad about her. Ethan goes into the house to say goodbye to his siblings. Kim insists on going to the car—even as Isaac says she is just making things worse—and Ethan says no. He is setting boundaries. Kim doesn’t like this at all and looks to Barry. That’s when the pushback begins. Ethan says that if it's a big deal for Kim & Barry to let Olivia say goodbye to his siblings, then Olivia will just wait until the siblings are 18 before she sees them again. Kim says it’s Barry’s call, and Ethan says she’s the neck that turns his head. Isaac asks them to make up. Barry says he loves Ethan, and Ethan says it’s nice to hear he loves him, but it’s not going to fly when Barry talks about Olivia behind Ethan’s back. Ethan says it is unfortunate that Olivia won’t be seeing them, and Barry tries to walk to the car to see him. Ethan stops him, and Isaac rushes over to prevent an altercation. Ethan firmly tells Barry not to talk to Olivia. He hugs his siblings, and leaves. Lydia is distraught. The Plath family embraces and cries. Kim says, “it just hurts.”
Back in the car, Ethan says his parents wouldn’t let the siblings come say goodbye to her. He says, “I’m sorry.” Olivia says, “I’m sorry. They’re your siblings, Ethan. I guess we just have each other.” She cries, too.
Back in the yard, Lydia asks if there was any forgiveness for anyone. Barry, in a talking head, says he is hurt by the situation. Lydia says Ethan is sacrificing the time he could be spending with Lydia for Olivia, which is hard for her, but she admires it. Kim says she is baffled, and that it will take a miracle to bring the two sides together.
Back at their house, Ethan says that conversation was a long time coming. It may not change anything, but they will know where he stands.
At Micah and Moriah’s, Ethan works with Moriah on one of his old cars. Ethan says he wants to work on the car to take his mind off of things. Micah arrives home and checks out the car. Ethan also went over to tell Micah and Moriah what happened. Ethan tells them he went over to the family house, and he has had a lot of anger over everything that’s happened, and he hasn’t gotten over not being able to see the siblings. Ethan says the way their parents have treated Olivia has made him mad. Ethan says Kim was jumping around, saying it was her property and Ethan and Barry also got into a fist fight. Ethan says it is sad and ugly, but in a weird way he is relieved and he can move on. Ethan says he is patient, but he has hit this breaking point. Micah and Moriah offer support, and Moriah says she looks up to him for doing what he had to do. Ethan asks Micah and Moriah to make sure the kids know he didn’t like how things ended, and he misses them and loves them and wants to see them as soon as they are able. Ethan has them make a pinky promise that the three of them will always keep in touch and stay together and keep in contact.
At the big family house, Micah and Moriah arrive to see the siblings. Both siblings want to tell their little siblings what Ethan said, but also they’re in a better place now and looking forward to family time. Moriah and Micah tell them what's going on: Micah signed with a large agency. Moriah has just finished recording some songs, and she wants to move near a large airport so she can travel. Kim says she wants to hear a song, and she would go to a concert to hear her sing, even if she played a gig at a bar. Kim says she always saw Moriah on a huge stage, and she was there cheering her on. Moriah and Micah are really touched by this. Kim & Barry say they support them. Micah, in a talking head, says it isn’t good to keep a grudge, and they are in the process of forgiveness. Kim says she is really proud of both of them. Kim is glad to have this conversation, and to model this adult conversation for the younger children. Barry & Kim hope this will happen with Ethan & Olivia, too. Moriah says she respects Ethan & Olivia and she hopes they can find a middle ground between both halves and they don’t want to be in the middle of that. Micah tells the little girls that Ethan & Olivia love them lots, and Moriah says not just the little girls—they love everyone. Micah and Moriah gave the siblings hugs from Ethan & Olivia. Barry wishes he could’ve done that moment on the driveway differently, and realizes he made a mistake. Kim blames Ethan’s approach. Barry says it will take a miracle to fix this, and they believe in miracles.
At the main house, Kim shows her daughters how to fold napkins. She has a special plan for the evening, and she’s the only one who knows. Kim then tells them to put on the fanciest dress they can find. Everyone has fun getting dressed up and they eat a fancy meal outside. Kim then brings out dessert: pie, which she promptly sticks right on Isaac’s face. A food fight ensues, and Kim says she didn’t used to be a prankster, but since everything has been heavy, it felt like the time to have some fun. Lydia says she can’t remember the last time she saw her mom laugh this hard. Kim is thrilled with how her surprise turned out, and Barry says this is a new side of Kim.
